Re: Server reboot after graceful UPS shutdown KB819760

Bood,

I still think you do not want this hotfix, because it appears that it will
cause the server to sit at a screen that says "It is now safe to power off
your computer" instead of actually shutting down the server completely to a
power-off state. That would cause an additional drain on the UPS.

I do not have this hotfix on any systems, and my systems (SBS 2003 RTM and
SP1, Server 2003 Standard RTM and SP1, 2000 Server SP4, XP Pro, and Win98)
all come back on after a power failure, due to the BIOS setting to ON after
a power failure.

This is true of clone systems, IBM servers, and Dell servers in my
experience.

If you have the UPS set correctly, it should kill its outlets completely
after an extended power failure, thereby removing all power to the
motherboard of the server. If the BIOS is set correctly, when you restore
power to the outlet, it should fire up.

Ok, thanks for your replies.

this is exactly what I am after. Because MS did not manage to get this
function correct with the inital release of SBS2003 verified by this link:

http://emea-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/emea_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2929&p_created=1057853424&p_sid=jcxQ-soi&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzMmcF9wcm9kcz00NDAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PTEuNDQwJnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1zaHV0ZG93bg**&p_li=&p_topview=1

I use APC Smart UPS, the server is an IBM x226 and I use Powerchute
business
ed.
I also have verified that the server starts when the power is connected.
However when a controlled shutdown occur this version of SBS2003 lacks the
ability to diffrentiate between the diffrent type of shutdowns that
exists.
As I read the KB article the hotfix will correct this. The article also
says
that this i corrected with the SP1 for server2003.

I will of course take another look at the bios settings next time I visit
this customer.

Feel free to give me your input.

Leythos,

Not only that, but have you looked at the KB article? I just read it, and
I
don't think that is what he wanted in the first place, since it changes
the
default behavior of how the OS shuts down, not how it comes back up.

Applying that article sounds as though it would prevent the computer from
turning off without manual intervention, kind of like an old NT4 server
or
Win98 on an AT motherboard.

The BIOS is definitively where he wants to look. I have my computers set
in
BIOS to boot after power failure, and my APC SmartUPS 1500 is set to turn
itself off after doing a safe OS shutdown if the power is off for an
extended period. Once power comes back and the UPS hits 10% of full
charge,
it powers up its outlets, which feed an IP-accessible 8-port power
switch.
When those outlets get power, all attached devices start up, which
includes
switches, firewalls, workstation, and two servers.

If I am out of the office and a workstation or server hangs completely, I
can power-cycle just its outlet for 30 seconds via the
Internet-accessible
power switch. When power comes on, so does the server.

BoodSweden@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says...
I have a customer who runs a SBS2003 Std. It is originally from the
first
release ie. without servicepack when installed.
The customer asked me why the server didn't reboot after a
powerfailure.
I said that they had to get SP1 installed on their server to get the
ability
to enable:

Do not turn off system power after a
Windows system shutdown has occurred.

After installation of SP1 and all the available patches this option is
still
not available.

So how do I get this feature....? It really bugs me that they can't
have
their server reboot automatically.

Any suggestions?

Check the BIOS power setting - most computers, low end servers, have
the
BIOS default set to not-resume after a power outage.
