Hi again,
Sorry for the length of time that has passed, as it's a production box
downtime is a issue.
Thanks for the reply Steven i have been through and tried all these
with no good outcome unfortunatly.
To answer your questions tho,
1. Do you also choose to backup other data while backup the system
state?
Originally i was but now for testing i'm only doing system state
backups to count out other problems.
2. Have you installed certain third-party backup application on the
system
such as Veritas, backupexec and so on?Yes i have BackupExec on there atm as well and it's having exactly the
same issue as soon as you enable any of the VSS components it hangs.
I've checked that reg key and it exists
I've read all those articals and none of them are the same as my
problem but i have tried the fixes for them as well.
It wouldn't let me install the hot fix as it said my service pack was
already newer so i couldn't try that
also i have tried changing the size of the page file from 0 to very
large etc with no difference.
It still works once then hang the next time.
Could the page file not be emptying after use? i was also told there is
a way to make windows recreate the page file on every boot. Which
considering i get one good system state per page file might be at least
a work around for the moment. Is this do able?
Thanks for your help so far.

Hi,
Thanks for posting here.
From your description, my understanding on this issue is that: System hang
when performing system state backup. If I have misunderstood anything,
please feel free to let me know.
Before we go any further, I would appreciate your help in gathering more
information so that I can perform a specific analysis first. Please let me
know the following:
1. Do you also choose to backup other data while backup the system state?
2. Have you installed certain third-party backup application on the system
such as Veritas, backupexec and so on?
Based on my research, please use the followings steps to check the status.
Step 1:
=========
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Locate to the following registry key:

2
The key should point to: %SystemRoot%\system32\msxml3.dll
Run the following command in Run box: regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Run ntbackup again to check the status.

I suggest you install the hotfix for the VSS to check the status since the
hotfix has fixed many known issue.
NOTE: hotfixes are generally available for specific issues in the Product.
Please keep in mind that they are not fully regression tested and should be
applied only to systems experiencing the specific problem. For this reason,
the first step would be to verify if you are indeed running into the
problem addressed in a specific hotfix. The individual sending of hotfixes
must be tracked by Microsoft for reasons such as: you may run into problems
