Sometimes cranking up the ping packet size (-L) from the default (32?) to
say 1500 can shake out some of those "flakies".

hmm, a fault which affects TCP/UDP but not ICMP, unusual but definitely
feasible.

Not true. I had an SMC hub kick my ass once. I could ping all day, but
nothing using DNS worked. Since the hub was heavily used, I could not
shut them down to reset it until late that afternoon. Once I reset it,
everything worked.

...well that was my first suspicion but here's the thing. ping to the
SBS
server works all through the DNS timeout. So it can't be the network
card.

Hi Vijay,
Before you look any further, I'd suggest trying another model NIC -
anything
but the ones you have now.
Shut down, install another NIC, boot up > transfer the NIC settings
from the
Broadcom to the new NIC, disable the Broadcom, and run the Connect to
the
Internet Wizard.
As that's a new server, you might consider calling Dell Server support
and
asking them if they have a fix. The Broadcom's don't work consistently,
sometimes not at all; Broadcom is building a fix but AFAIK it's not
available yet. In that case, Dell might agree to send you some
replacement
NICs of another model or brand.

I am trying to setup/configure SBS 2003 R2 in or company and have it
up
except that I get intermittent DNS timeouts. This happens every few
minutes
and then it suddenly starts working again. I figure it is
configuration
related and could do with some help/tips to troubleshoot this. I've
looked
at
the DNS and event logs. Nothing there that I see is useful.
We have a very simple configuration.
T1 -> Router -> Netgear Firewall (FVS114) -> Our Network (SBS is one
of
the
clients on it). The SBS server is a Dell PowerEdge 2900 and I have
disabled
one of the NICs. I am using only one NIC. ipconfig /all output is as
follows:
