It would be just about impossible to get me to rebuild a server for an
undiagnosed problem. What if this is being caused by a file you reinstall -
all that work will have been wasted.
Dell is having issues with certain hard drives. I'd go to the downloads
page and see if there are firmware updates for the drives involved (they're
conveniently located with the SCSI Controller downloads). If there are
firmware updates available, you should install them regardless of how this
issue resolves otherwise.
I'd install Open Manage Server Administrator and/or the most recent Dell
Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues arise (the most recent version of
Server Administrator does not include diagnostics, so you need to get that
separately). Once you install Server Administrator, you'll get a lot more
hardware-related info in your system logs in case there's something up
there. And the most recent version supports predictive failure for hard
drives - there's a column for "Failure Predicted."
I would check the event logs for anything insightful. You could also take a
quick look at Device Manger to see if all appears normal there - if someone
let MU or some other auto-updating thing install driver updates, there could
be an issue around that.
Hopefully if you're having drive issues, something is logged. Either way,
you could try running chkdsk to see if it comes up with anything. Also,
check the drives for free space, check and delete excess temp files, check
the page file settings, and run an AV scan.
Lastly, if you can't think of anything else, I'd call Microsoft support.
Even if they end up diagnosing it back to a Dell issue, you'll have the
ammunition you need to get Dell to do something about it.

I have a strange problem with Dell PE 2600 servers at two of my customers
sites.
Both servers installed roughly 2.5 years ago and been running fine until
recently.
When the server is rebooted we get a blank screen for about 3 mins just
before the Windows splash screen appears. The server comes up ok and
everyone can login. However we are unable to browse the C: drive or get
to
add/remove programs...there could be more but this is all I've found so
far.
If we try to browse the C: drive or go to add/remove programs the drives
start thrashing and the server slows up. Been on to Dell support for the
past couple of nights, they are now suggesting a rebuild of the OS due to
some sort of corruption...I just find it a bit strange that I have this on
two sites when they have both been fine for 2.5 years.
Any suggestions???
Thanks
.
