Re: Could not create mailbox alias as microsoft@mydomain

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Yep, looks like "hands off" is the correct approach.

Agree.....Agree........Agree and Agree.

I was sure I didn't create the address and folder but just didn't know why
it was there. And I don't like messing with stuff that the install put in
there because it's usually there for a reason......even if know one knows
why!!

OK, now that I'm able to get connected to an exchange server, this is
definitely a public folder. It is a built in public folder that is in the
schema-root path with addresses generated by default from the Recipient
update Service.
I'd be real careful making changes to it! But if you have a @domain.local
in addition to the @domain.com address, you might consider removing the
@domain.com and unchecking the automatically update address based upon
recipient update.

I was creating a microsoft@xxxxxxxxxxxx for one of the additional
@domain.com addresses not the primary domain name. So, that is why it
worked for me and not for you.

While this explains the failure in creating the address you want, I'd
suggest leaving it alone and using something else like MSMail@xxxxxxxxxx
or at least Microsoft1@xxxxxxxxxx

Maybe Lanwench will drop in and tell us all what this built in public
folder is really all about. (hook baited, tossing in the river) ;-)

Well it confirms you have some object using that email address.

Append other object attributes like;

cn mail name displayname

and perhaps you can figure out what it is. I'm guessing it's a
distribution list or public folder. Definitely an Exchange object.

So just what does this tell me other than the address is in the system?
Where is the address...where is the mail for the address going to go if
someone uses the Microsoft address to send an e-mail? Evidently no
where because if I try to send to that address I get a message
"Delivery Status Notification (Failure)" Below are the results of the
adfind command.

adfind -gc -b -f "proxyaddresses=smtp:microsoft@xxxxxxxxxxxx" cn mail

Ah, found it (the Exchange tool to find objects using a specifc email
address. The tool does much, much more though)

You will need to get "Adfind" (free) from www.joeware.net ( No
Install, just a single exe)

adfind -gc -b -f "proxyaddresses=smtp:microsoft@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" cn
mail

Hi all,
we recently switched to Windows 2003 SBS.
Setting up Exchange all work fine except for one thing.
I set up a mailbox such as : info@mydomain
then i put as SMTP alternative address a lot of mailbox name we
gave
to our customer in these years.
Beetween these adresses ther is the address "microsoft@mydomain",
we
used this address to comunicate with microsoft now and in the past.
When i try to create the SMTP address Exchange warn me the address
is
yet used and is impossible to create it !!!

How can i proceed ?
What's wrong ??

Thanks for reply

Maybe you have a public folder called Microsoft....check;
mail-disable it if it's using that address. If it isn't a public
folder, it's either a user, a group, or a contact and you can search
in Active Directory Users & Computers.

Hi,
thanks for answer
i've performed a complete check of public folder and users but noone
use smtp address microsoft@mydomain in the organization.
I've also tried create smtp address "microsoft@mylocalfqdn" but the
error is the same !!
seems anything start with "microsoft" is locked !!
strange isn't it ??

bye
