Re: New server needs motherboard suggestions

Hi Leythos

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BUILD YOUR OWN!!!!

You can then choose all the bits AND more importantly know you server,
helpful if things go wrong.

Ideally an Intel dual XEON motherboard ( I prefer really naked boards aparet
from VGA but they are hard to find now) - I am running 15 XP machines from a
SBS2003 prem box plus permanent VPN, EPOS, FAX, SQL, AV on a Gigabyte dual P3
733 1Gb just shows you don't need silly specs!!

Adaptec RAID 2110 or similar - SCSI HDD subsystem *** a must**
HDD Drives (x2) for system) & Big IDE for secondery storage (All Cooled)
which you can upgrade to SCSI depending on your needs (IDE - needs backing up
regularly and cant handle many simultaneous read/writes)
2x ZEONS 2800 will be fine
1GB(min) ECC RAM (MATCHED TO YOUR MOTHERBOARD - IMPORTANT)
SBS 2003 Prem (not oem so you can move the install if hardware fails)
Panda Coroporate antivirus (uses SQL nicely for central administration for
network updates)

If your Mobo has SCSI match it up to the backup tape device AND HDD's in
case the raid card fails at least you can use the other SCSI port and one
drive to get you working

Additional, if you do choose an Intel mobo you get all the nice remote
diagnostic software aswell (which you know how to use cos you have the
paperwork which comes with it dell pleae note!)
Use two different makes of NIC so you can recocgnise them during setup (for
LAN and router not two onboard if you can help it)

Lastly - important make sure you get good (redundant) power supplies fed
from a GOOD UPS (min interactive ideally online) in a good (intel) case with
room for expansion and additioanl cooling.

The above will not be cheaper than say DEL Poweredge 1800 but trust me i
made the mistake of purchaseing a prebuilt server - bloody nightmare!!! I had
no control didn't know what was going on and contrained by custom Bios
drivers etc

Hope this helps
Matt

We are preparing to build a new server. I am looking for motherboard
suggestions for the new computer. Let me know what has worked for you,
and what we should stay away from.

ASUS or Intel server motherboards - and they need to specify SERVER in
their description.

I've been building white-box servers for many years, most of them
outperform the Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM, servers, since they have the same
parts, often times the same motherboard, but I spec better controllers,
drives with large cache, etc... In the process of spec'ing higher end
hardware you can still get a lower cost as you don't pay for the vendors
BRANDING of the box.

I typically purchase the ASUS or Intel Dual CPU boards, then a SATA RAID
Controller from 3WARE or Adaptec, but I never purchase a RAID controller
that doesn't have memory and I almost never use the onboard RAID
controller built into motherboards.
