this is getting really long and a bit confusing. ICS should be set to
disabled in SBS2003.
For your mail look into smarthost.
I would wait until you get the CD for ISA. But if there is anything else
that I can answer, please reply to this but wipe everything out so we can
start with a cleaner message.

Actually, you can choose your own server name, but the list of possibleTo register a domain, I would need a static IP, wouldn't I? My ADSLAs to Exchange, your setup is really unusual. I'm very surprised
that
your
ISP lets you send directly with the ISP address. You will be
blocked
by
quite a few recipient mail servers because the sending IP address
doesn't
match your email domain.
Maybe my problem is that they used to allow it, but no longer do so?
<snip>
You got the idea. It used to work but more and more domains get locked
down.
Does this mean that I should ask my ISP if I can use the other
option
(the smart host). Why didn'ty they make the SMTP work like the POP3
Smarthost is the way to go. Or better, get your domain registered and
do
it
yourself.
modem gets a dynamic address. To get on a plan with a static IP address
would be expensive, and would require managerial intervention. I would
rather not go down that road because I would have to justify the
additional expense. I would even have to explain why the user can't
just use Hotmail. Also, free dynamic DNS services don't generally let
you choose your own domain name.
No, you don't. Goto http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/
it's a free service and you can choose your domain name.
domain names is at
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/domains.html. We have used
their service in the past, to demonstrate remote viewing of security
cameras to customers.
OK.
What I would really like is if in the
SMTP connector, I could define a list of ISP addresses, map them to
Exchange mailboxes, and tell the connector that the SMTP server is
mailserver.ISP.com, and Exchange would send the mail as an SMTP client
and not a server.
You are talking about smarthost. You need to check with your ISP if they
support that.
<snip>
To be honest, I am not sure where to check that. TCP/IP is not reallyOf course, I cannot do anything, because all attempts to configure the
firewall fail, whether I enable or disable.
I assume that you opened 25 and 110 on your router and have them
forwarded
to your SBS box.
I never personally opened or closed anything. However, since on one
occasion, I did allow CEICW to configure my UPnP device (Speedtouch
546
ADSL modem), I jdid a factory reset of the modem and configured it
from
scratch. The ADSL modem is now as it was when everything was
working. However, only web browsing is working.
You need to check on the router if those 2 ports are open and
forwarding
to
your server.
I gave my laptop a 10.x.x.x address, etc. On the laptop, using Outlook
Express, I sent a message to myself and received it. "telnet
msnews.microsoft.com nntp" also gave me a response, as well as "telnet
ftp.microsoft.com ftp". I assume that ports are open by default.
Definitely, Microsoft Firewall is blocking STMP and POP3, and probably
everything but HTTP, and because CEICW always fails on Firewall
configuration, I cannot do anything about it. I even tried manually
creating protocol rules, but that did not work either,
Outgoing requests are always allowed. I was taking about incoming
requests
on port 110 and 25.
my area, as I am sure that you have figured out by now. If you mean
NAPT entries, the table is blank. Absolutely no entries are defined. In
any case, why would it matter if incoming SMTP and POP3 requests are
blocked? My server is not a public server. Nobody is sending mail to
myserver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, and they are not downloading POP3 mail from it
either. When Exchange e-mail was working, mail was sent with the FROM:
field containing our ISP account. Replies would go to the ISP account,
which would be downloaded by POP3 connector.
Right now, my biggest problem is that I cannot send and receive mail in
Outlook Express on the server. I don't see what inbound requests have
to do with that.

IPNat.sys is used for the NAT translation. What is the exact error
(including error number and type) that you get in the event log?
The error log says:
(Source: IPNATHLP)
"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service
could
not start because another program or service is running that might
use
the network address translation component (Ipnat.sys). This can
occur
when Routing and Remote Access is enabled. If this is the case, you
must disable Routing and Remote Access before the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service can start.
I did not see any Error IDs in the log. There were two log entries, but
And then:
(source: Service Control Manager)
"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service
terminated with the following error:
The requested resource is in use."
No additional information was available in either case.
I need the ErrorID numbers, not only the source.

I ordered it today for $5.00. When it comes I will install it and seeYou don't want to go there. Get 2004.
Well, we are running SBS2003 Premium (to get SQL Server). I will call
Microsoft when I have some time. I hope that it really is free.
It's really free. It is part of the service pack but you need the CDs and
can't download it.
what happens. Thank you for your help so far.
