purchased in 2003, came with ISA2000 Standard, not ISA2004. We were

As to Exchange, your setup is really unusual. I'm very surprised that
your
ISP lets you send directly with the ISP address. You will be blocked by
quite a few recipient mail servers because the sending IP address doesn't
match your email domain.

Maybe my problem is that they used to allow it, but no longer do so? I
tested mainly by trying to send a message to the ISP e-mail address.
The SMTPSVC log entries said "could "not bind to domain XXX.com in
DNS". I cannot ping ISP.com. I can, however, ping mailserver@xxxxxxxx
In another case (Mail.com), it said "mail.com is refusing connections"
or something to that effect. That is probably what you were talking
about. For what it's worth, Mail.com also does not allow me to send
e-mails to my cell phone's pseudo e-mail address
<phone-number@cellprovider-domain>, although it works my ISP account,
Hotmail, Yahoo and others .

You got the idea. It used to work but more and more domains get locked down.


Does this mean that I should ask my ISP if I can use the other option
(the smart host). Why didn'ty they make the SMTP work like the POP3

Smarthost is the way to go. Or better, get your domain registered and do it
yourself.


Don't publish anything that you don't use. As far as I can see you also
don't need a certificate. Take out the OWA and RWW but allow POP3 in and
out.

I assume that you opened 25 and 110 on your router and have them
forwarded
to your SBS box.

I never personally opened or closed anything. However, since on one
occasion, I did allow CEICW to configure my UPnP device (Speedtouch 546
ADSL modem), I jdid a factory reset of the modem and configured it from
scratch. The ADSL modem is now as it was when everything was
working.However, only web browsing is working.

You need to check on the router if those 2 ports are open and forwarding to
your server.

IPNat.sys is used for the NAT translation. What is the exact error
(including error number and type) that you get in the event log?

I need the ErrorID numbers, not only the source.


I see where there is a Trial of ISA2006, but there is no direct upgrade
path from ISA2000 to ISA2006. I suppose I would have to uninstall
ISA2000 and then install ISA2006. Since everyone is OK except me (they
don't need SMTP or POP3), I will need to wait until Sunday , when I can
have the server to myself.

You don't want to go there. Get 2004.
