Re: share a network drive with clients

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Copying the data locally in the server is discarded since we are
talking about a few hundreds of GBs. Also, new security patches and
updates will also have to be sincronizehd. So, your conclusion is that
I will have to go one by one the clients machines and map the network
drive with my account? This I could do since we are only talking about
around 12 PCs. But now, once every machine is mapping the drive, how do
I make the applications in the mapped network drive installable from
the add new programs menu in the client PCs?
Cheers,
Bobby

Well the clients would need to do the same or you'd need to copy the data
local to the SBS server.

If "anonymous" access were allowed then you might want to put it in a login
script.

Hi Kj,
I have an account in the other domain so I could map this network drive
from the SB server using the command line: net use \\network_drive_path
otherDomani\user password

The clients might be able to map a network drive to the remote resource
and
you might be able to have this happen in a user login script. The
"mights"
are all about "where" ( and on what server ) this "somewhere else"
resource
exists. Please add some details about how you mapped the drive when
logged
in from the server.

Hi ,
thanks for your replies.
This network drive is not in the SB Server but somewhere else. There is
another big domain in which clients can install software from this
network drive using add/remove programs so since I mapped the drive
from the SB server, I though I could do the same for the SBS clients. I
guess it is some trick with the group policies and sharing this network
drive with the clients, no? I am quite a begginer in this
administration stuff ;)

I think the OP is trying to Share out a User (logged on to the Server)
mapped (network) drive.

If that's the case, it won't work that way. Where is the original
share
located?

Hi,
I mapped a network drive to my SBS 2003. This drive contain files
to
install applications. I would like the server clients to have
access
to this files and if possible to be able to install them with the
add
new programs menu. I tried to find some documentation about how to
do
this but I couldnt find it. Can someone point me to the right place
to look or maybe give me some hint about how to proceed?
Thanks,
Bb.

I'm not sure what it is you're trying to do. Let's see if I
understand -

1. You have a mapped drive for your users that points at a share on
your
SBS box
2. This drive contains installation images of software
3. You want your users to access this mapped drive from their
workstations
and install software

?

If so - well, I wouldn't want to do this, certainly (I don't think
users
need to be installing software, and I don't give them rights to do
so)
but
if they have local admin rights on their workstations (!) they can
execute
any setup files they like, wherever they are...just double click on
setup.exe and do whatever.
