Here's the log, comments below:

Backup Runner started.
LaunchNTBackup failed. (0x8007007a)
NTBackup finished the backup with errors.

For more information about failed backups, see the article on
troubleshooting your backup at the following Web page:

Backup ended at Tuesday, November 14, 2006 1:00 AM
Backup error finished with error code 0X8007007A.

This is after fixing the other problem I had with the backup configuration
and Les suggested http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823379 (applied on the
10th), which worked. The scheduled backup on the 11th completed
successfully. The next scheduled backup failed with the error noted above. I
get no returns from the KB on this failure, neither for "LaunchNTBackup
failed" or 0x8007007a. No backup file was created.

Any ideas? Looking around the web:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264522

perhaps?

Or have you done anything to the "Backup User" account?

1. SBS Backup seems to be problematic. Any suggestions for a more reliable
solution?

It works pretty well for me and my customers. Other than one who has an unusual backup strategy, involving a mixture of full and differential backups to a combination of tape, network and external HD storage.
