Re: WSUS and lack of disk space for R2

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

No it doesn't have a PATA connection. I know that it's tight for space
that's why I want to add SATA drives. It is a twin Zeon machine and is
running very well so as yet I do not want to do anything major. A lot of
other work is done on other servers (backup, security, TS) so the 32 GB is
doing OK. Everything non essential has been stripped off. It's a lean, mean
machine!! We are waiting for SBS 200????? before replacing it.

WSUS is what is breaking the camels back. Any idea on the suitability of a
SATA contoller and drives co-exisiting with SCSI?

Wow I can't imagine trying to run a production SBS 2003 R2 even without
WSUS with a total of 32 GB disk space. I guess your data, Exchange stores,
SQL databases etc. are not very large. Good luck on making it through for
another 18 months! Does your motherboard have an used PATA connection
available? I'd think so with that vintage of a box. You could then just
use a PATA drive for the WSUS data.

I want to upgrade to 2003 R2 but do not have enough space on our server.
(8GB needed in one partition for WSUS)

Currently it has 3 16GB SCSI disks in Raid 5 to give 32 GB. If I add
another disk to this I believe that it can only be the same size as the
existing drives unless someone can tell me another way to do this.

Alternatively can someone tell me if either of the following would work:

1. Put WSUS on another server in the network - if so how?
2. Add either 1 SATA controller and drive (or SATA raid 1 and 2 drives)
for WSUS and less critical files that would be backed up daily. The
exiting SCSI would continue to be used for OS, Exchange and SQL. Can SATA
and SCSI run on the same machine?

To replace all the SCSI drives would be too expensive and we plan to
upgrade the server in about 18 months. The SATA drives would not be
wasted then as we could put them into a NAS enclosure.
