RE: SBS tape backup errors, Fails every time

Dave,

Everyone knows/knew nothing at all about tapes at some point in our
management development learning curve. Welcome to the club. For me I
learned on an AIT tape system as well. I absolutely love AIT BTW. The dumb
business owner refuses my strong advice and drives around with the offsite
tape in his glove box exposing it to road vibration and unnecessary heat.
Still through it all those AIT tapes are tough.

My simple recommendation for you to start learning more about the Backup
modes of failure is to click on the link (generic listing of SBS problems
including Backup) that was at the bottom of your backup log. BTW it would
seem you clipped out the part that contains the information of what failed
....or am I misunderstanding. Often for me when my backup fails it is for two
reasons. One, forgot to insert a tape. Two, forgot to delete unneeded SQL
database backup and the data wouldn't fit on the tape. Regarding number two,
although I have too much data the error log never states this reason for the
error/backup failure. I've read and talked to enough people including
recently to the SBS Project Manager who developed the SBS backup. BTW he is
very much going to revolutionize backups when Cougar comes in a year or two.

Once you've got that underfoot. I've recently blogged how to have your tape
autoeject and send you a "success" email message. It uses the RSM and
Eventtriggers commands, a script, a little effort on your part to learn about
the GUID of your RSM library or drive. http://unroes.spaces.live.com/blog

good luck,
DUIT Dale

Alright, I set up the server with a Sony tape drive and got the correct
tapes. I ran the wizard for setting up the SBS backup solution from the
"Server Mgmt" home page. It worked fine for a couple days, we switch out the
tapes daily (we have a rotating set for each day of the week) and then it
started failing. Are the tapes filling up? Do I need to format them to clear
the data and make more room? I am a pretty good tech, but this is the first
time I have had to deal with tapes. I cannot find a good description online
on how they work with SBS 2003. All of this is foreign to me but it seemed
really straight forward at first and it was working! Then the errors came up

Thanks in advance for any help,
