Re: Accessing Files of SBS Server from Media Center Extender Session

Is this a home server as opposed to day to day business server?

I use the extenders to play media files kept on the SBS server, e.g. music, videos, etc. Hence the difficulty in accessing those media files is unfortunate.

Well perhaps someone else can add more information
What exactly are you trying to do with the extenders?
I don't run MCE so I'm only asking information others will ask

It is not joined to the domain. From the description of that hack, the hack would allow joining the domain, but at the price of not being able to use extenders. Obviously that wouldn't address my problem because my problem is:

How do I let extenders access content on SBS the same way I was able to allow extenders to access content when I was running XP Pro?

How do you do this? I am having difficulty getting the extender
sessions to "see" any of the files on the SBS server. I've created
users matching each of the MCX1, MCX2 etc. extender users on the MCE
machine, but presumably because the password is blank on the SBS server
for those users (and unknowable on the MCE machine) these users aren't
getting access to the SBS server's shares. A non-extender session has
no problem, because I have created a User on MCE with no password and a
corresponding user on SBS.

I recently switched from using XP Pro to serve these files. I had a
similar problem when I first started using XP Pro, but I was able to
get around this by allowing access without a password using the
following steps:

1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance |
Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.

2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.

3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank
passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable
this option and click OK.

Under XP Pro, this permited network access without a password. The
extender user could be validated against the corresponding XP
Professional user account, without a password.

Is there an analog with SBS, or a better way to accomplish what I am
trying to do?
