Re: ????SATA or SCSI????

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Well thanks to you all for all the information,

In a perfect world I would go SAS but as COST is a big player in this I will
be going with the Following.

1 x FastTrak TX2300
£63.99 each

2 x 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
£55.99 each

I know that this is not the BEST but as long as i can get 3 years out of the
drives and with a 5 Year Mfg warrenty I hope that this will do the job.

The usage is 12 Users max with a 8 hour window of use! most files are on teh
PC and saved to the server Via Sync so the network usage is low! also with
the Tape backup every day i hope that this will be better than the onboard at
the Moment!

(Crappy onboard raid cards)

Thanks for all your help and i think that this has been one of teh best
responces for ages! 28 Post must be a record!

Which is why I chose the Seagate Barracuda ES drives for my server. They are

This has been a great conversation but there's one thing no one has
mentioned except indirectly. Many lower cost SATA drives in a RAID array
show intermittent errors because of timing problems. This is exacerbated
by low cost (on board controllers). The drives are often replaced because
the controller shows them as failed. In reality if you test the drive it's
fine. The controller marked it as bad because of the timing errors. If you
use SATA drives that are explicitly rated for RAID use you won't have this
problem and they will be as reliable as SCSI drives of the same quality.
As with anything buy the proper parts rated for what you are using them
for.

Hello,

I have just had another SATA HDD crash on me in my SBS- 2003 STD
server and I was wondering!

Have any other people had problems with SATA when used to hold data
in their SBS server.

I have been told by a furm that we sometime use when I get a bit
tight on time that SATA is NO good to be used on Data servers and
that we NEED SCSI Raid 5!

We have about 10GB MAX on the disks and only about 12 people
accessing, and maybe only 5 at the same time!

What do you all think??????
