Hi Keith
We have a similar situation and use Norton Ghost Corporate.
We have a build of PC that we buy as standard, configure one machine and use
the Ghost Images for new ones. When the build becomes dated we buy a high
end build and rebuild our installation for it then purchase that Build for a
while. If having the latest spec machine is not always vital to you this
could be an option. As you say this also allows us to re-image the machines
should we have any probs.
Regarding users, we have Templated Users on the Server. To make it complex
for us we have a number of industry specific applications which are
non-standard products we use batch files and/or reg files to configure the
settings for these for a new user. We are soon to implement this in a Logon
Script so that it configures the user on first login.
Its not ideal, you need to build a new machine every now and then, Service
Packs & updates also mean you have to re-copy your image occasionally, but
it's the best we have found. I would be interested to hear others
solutions.
It may be worth looking at RIS if the above is not to your liking. Although
RIS is used by many professionals we found ourself banging our heads against
a brick wall trying to get it to work for us (one of our builds was OEM -
never again). I also hear that Acronis imaging software is a good option, I
believe similar to Norton Ghost (but don't quote me as I have no experience
with this one).
Hope it helps.
Thanks
B

Ghost would work for crashed computers, but what about new users and
computers?

Norton Ghost. There are many versions of this, personal, network,
corporate, etc. There is a version that you would setup a PC as a main
server and then streamline the image of the computer over the network
to the new machine, or old machine, and it would set it up exactly like
it was at the time the image was made. No other setup involved.

I would like to get some opinions and advice from the newsgroup.
I have a business with about 25 Users. They experience some employee
turnover. This business uses lots of macros and custom settings in
Word,
Outlook, and they have other applications they use.
They are looking for a way to streamline computer setup when they have
employee turnover, or have to repair or purchase a new computer. I'm
looking
at being able to apply some sort of template to set up the client
exactly the
way they want it or atleast take most of the tweaking out of the
process.
They spend between 2 to 4 hours setting up a computer for a new user or
after
a repair.
I'm already using group policy but it does not give me all of the
functions
I would like to change.
I've tried the File and Settings Transfer Wizard, but I have found that
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When it does work it
seems to
do most of what is needed. Is there a third party app that is more
reliable.
What are the things some of you do to address this situation?
.
