Thanks. Existing clients will retain IP address until next lease timeout at
least and then the second dhcp scope will be online.
I did not know of sbs2003's dhcp restriction. thanks.

I would set the second one to be DNS (integrated AD), and set up a DHCP
scope that mirrors what is set up in your SBS server. Then exclude
different ranges from each. (So, for example, SBS has DHCP from 10-200,
with 101-200 excluded. Server 2k3 has DHCP from 10-200, with 10-100
excluded.) Set the default gateway on this box to point through itself,
obviously. And the DNS order should be reversed.
Do NOT authorize the secondary DHCP server (SBS doesn't want to see any
other DHCP servers on the network. ) If the SBS box is down, you go in to
the secondary and authorize and start the DHCP server and you're in
business. Existing clients will need to repair their connection or reboot.

I have a client, a not-for-profit, that has a two NIC SBS2003 SP1. Domain
runs fine. They also own a Dell Poweredge and a Windows 2003 server
license. I am thinking about using this as a second domain controller and
not much else. It has only 512 mg and dual 36 g hard drives so not a lot
of resource here.
I'm stuck on the configuration to best survive a SBS2003 server failure.
If this office was configured with a single NIC SBS2003 life would be
easier.
If I dual NIC the DELL and place it's external on a public IP address,
which they do have two of, then set DHCP and DNS up on the DELL, if the
SBS2003 failed the users would have full log on access and Internet
through the DELL.
I would have to adjust the DHCP leases to point to both servers as DNS
and gateway.
Is anyone doing this?
