Re: Can't Send Mail Through ISP's SMTP

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

We have just set up SBS 2003. We installed DHCP and are using it as
the DHCP server on the network instead of the router.

That's good....as long as it's dishing out the correct info.

On each PC, we
are using the ISP's SMTP server to send mail through Outlook.

That's bad (well, I think so, anyway). Why are you configuring Internet
mail accounts in Outlook, when you have Exchange?

Because we've been trying to get the Exchange SMTP and the Pop connector to
work consistently. So far, we haven't had much luck. One works, the other
doesn't. We get one to start working, the other one quits. Back and forth.
Until things are consistent, we are not going to switch over.

Everything was working fine.

We have now gone through and setup Exchange on the same server. Now,
these same PC's can no longer send mail through the ISP's SMTP
server. What went wrong?

What errors do you get?

Task 'server name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800ccc0f): 'The
connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact
your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

We are not yet ready to switch completely
over to Exchange,

What's it going to take to make you ready? You know you can use the SBS
POP connector in the interim, until you're ready to make the leap to
hosting your domain's mail directly on the server. I don't like the POP
connector, but it's certainly better (and easier) than configuring OL to
do all this work.

SBS 2003 and Exchange being reliable without all the kinks is what it's
going to take to be ready. Yes, again, we have been trying to use the SBS
Pop connector.

so I need to know how to fix this.

When we switch back to static IP's on each PC and use the router for
the gateway and DNS server, we can then send mail again through the
ISP's SMTP server. So, I'm guessing this has something to do with
routing?? Can someone please help me debug this problem?

Try posting an unedited ipconfig /all from the SBS box, and from a problem
workstation - and let us know which is which.

I'll have to get this on my next post as I don't have access to one of the
workstations at the moment.
