I've done that.
But when I try and upgrade the default instance I still get this error:
I have run it from Add/Remove and still get this error.
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools
Allowed Action: Maintain (Action is only available from Add or Remove
Programs)
Reason: Cannot maintain product, to maintain the product go to Add or Remove
Programs

Ok will give it a go. Will you be around in the next half an hour in case
something goes horribly wrong?

Follow that link. (I didn't post it just for grins ;-)
You need to remove the SQL 2000 and follow those instructions.

I see there is still a copy of SQL 2000 in Add/Remove as well as the
newly installed SQL 2005.
Do I need to remove this version as well?
Will it break ISA 04 or Backup Exec?
Thanks for your help

Hi,
I uninstalled the SQL 2000 (Sharepoint) version and it let me install
SQL 2005 and successfully created the SHAREPOINT instance.
The whole point of moving to upgrading to SQL 2005 is on request from
the accounting firm which will be install the latest version of Great
Plains.
But I assume I need to upgrade the default instance too, but when I try
that I get a similar error message.

You don't upgrade.. you uninstall the old SQL and install the new one
Read the readme file
www.sbslinks.com/sql2005.htm
Been there, done that.
