Hi Xavier,
I gave up. I am leaving Sophos on my desktops and switching to a
hosted solution for email scanning. While I never had any serious
problems due to the 1164, it just never seemed worth the hassle to
argue with Sophos.

Hello,
I would be interrested to know if someone has recently heard any news from
Sophos about the infamous error 1164. After experiencing the issue on
several systems, I was in contact with them in March / April, were I was
basically told that they never heard of the problem. After a few weeks, I
was able to provide them with perfmon logs that I could relate to
PureMessage logs and show them that when the error 1164 occurs, it is a few
seconds after spam rules have been updated in PureMessage. The feedback I
received was to upgrade which proved to be inefficient.
The only choice I have now is to trap errors 1164, kill the Store process
and restart the store service. I don't know if others have found a cleaner
way to restart IS (net stopping the service does not work). Today, for the
first time, error 1164 (and certainly the way I have to restart the IS)
resulted in corrupted store. A restore of the store followed by the replay
of the logs solved the issue, but this is something I can't afford: it is
too risky and looks unprofessional towards customers.
I am now considering dropping Sophos in favor of Trend CSM (that I use one
some servers). Before taking such a step, I'd like to hear from others how
they deal with this issue.
Thanks,
Xavier
