RE: Replication Between SBS2k3 & Win2000

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the reply, I now understand how to make the same GP's
available through Windows 2000 and if I do have issues with the SBS after
then, I will install the mentioned patch.

I believe I have also diagnosed the intermittency issue using the MS utility
REPLMON and FRSDIAG from the 2003 Resource Kit.

Using REPLMON on the SBS server, in the group policies screen it showed that
the Windows Firewall GP in the SYSVOL share and the AD were out of date (by
two changes).

I used the FRSDIAG on the SBS server to analyse the file replication logs
which showed three errors, and the date of the last error and the last change
made to the Firewall GP were the same, so I assumed it would not connect.

This pointed me in the direction of the file replication section in event
viewer which listed the following (see bottom) event log, I followed the
instructions within the event log for deleting the SBS server from file
replication and adding it back, and all is now OK, no more intermittent
firewall issues. Along with now being able to manage the group policies from
either domain controller, I am a very happy chap, thanks Steve!

I hope this post is useful to anyone else experiencing similar issues.

Thanks for your help once again Steve..

Kind Regards,

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you would like to control
the Windows XP SP2 firewall via Group Policy from Windows 2000 Server. If I
have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, if you want to control the Windows Firewall through
Windows 2000 domain group policies, you can upgrade the domain group
policies. You can follow these steps on a Windows XP SP2-based workstation:

1. Click Start, click Run, type "mmc" (without the quotation marks), and
then click OK.

2. On the File menu, click "Add/Remove Snap-in".

3. In the "Add/Remove Snap-in" dialog box, click Add.

4. In the "Add Standalone Snap-in" dialog box, click Group Policy, and then
click Add.

5. In the Select Group Policy Object dialog box, Local Computer appears as
the target object. Click Browse, select the GPO that you want to upgrade
(for example, Default Domain Group Policy), and then click OK. Note that
when you click Browse, a delay might occur while Windows searches for the
policy objects in the domain.

6. Click Close.

7. Click OK.

After upgrading the policy settings, you may fail to edit the group
policies on the SBS server and if so, you should download and install the
hot fix in the following KB article:
