Once I actually used the nslookup command correctly, it listed various
information and showed no errors. Any other thoughts where I could look?

I only used the wizards at the original install. (which is aptly encouraged
in other posts here, for those of us with limited knowledge). The only A
record is the server address itself (192.168.1.100). The pointers are the
static addresses of each user. There is no reference to an MX record. This
completely differs from the DNS Step-by-step guide which I believe assumes
hosting your own domain? I'm a bit confused with the local configuration.
The nslookup shows:
Server: server.ourdomain.local
Address: 192.168.1.100
server.ourdomain.local can't find nslookup : non-existent domain
