Re: Is there an upgrade to SQL 2005 Standard ?

Hardware costs are significant portion of overall cost.

If I can postpone the hardware costs, and do this in 2 separate steps (if
needed) the overall cost is much more digestible.

I did some ballpark pricing from Dell's website and when you start adding up
rackmount server, raid 5 scsi, external tape bu, the costs start rolling up.

Our current SBS 2003 server seems to be able to handle the load with room to
spare and there is enough free disk space for growth for some time.

I don't know that the costs will be much less except for hardware as you'll
still need the SQL 2005 standard license and appropriate number of CALs.
The expanded CAL rights in SBS 2003 R2 only cover SQL 2005 WE.

The current version 10.5 runs on SQL 2000

The current "newer" version 11.0 runs on either SQL 2000 or SQL 2005

At some point newer versions will run only on SQL 2005.

Buying standalone SQL 2005 and installing it on my SBS2003 Server is
still much cheaper than bringing up another member server.

Good to know that SQL 2005 Standard will run on SBS 2003 R2.

Can it run on SQL 2000?

You could put it on the SBS box but you still have to buy standalone SQL
2005.

If I but the standalone product, I then cannot install it on my SBS
2003 server, I need to bring up another member server and install it
there ?

Did I get that right ?

I really would "like" to install it on my SBS Server to save some $$

May I ask which LOB app that is?

You have to buy the standalone product.

I currently run SBS 2003 Premium.

The R2 version installs SQL 2005 Workgroup.

My LOB has determined that they will only support Standard or
Enterprise.

Is there an upgrade path to get to SQL 2005 Standard, perhaps
SBS2003 R2 then to SQL 2005 Standard ?

If I look at the requirements for Standard they list SBS 2003 SP1 or
later ... but being a doubting thomas I wonder what it will break ?
