Re: Question about F6 when installing SBS

Great work Gregg! Thanks for figuring this one out! Now all we need
is to figure out how to fix the nVidia storage controller miniport
driver's txtsetup.oem and/or .inf files so that their miniport storage
drivers will load from floppy (on F6) under Windows PE.

Kevin,

I found the problem. While I was trying to build a BartPE bootable CD, it
kept failing with errors related to the drivers that I had previously tried
to install when booting ShadowProtect. Looking at the errors, I figured out
that the txtsetup.oem file had errors in the first lines.

It was:
[Disks]
d1 = "INITIO INIC1620 S-ATA Adapter for Windows
NT4.0",winnt\inic1620.sys,winnt
d2 = "INITIO INIC1620 S-ATA Adapter for Windows
2000",win2000\inic1620.sys,win2000
d3 = "INITIO INIC1620 S-ATA Adapter for Windows
XP/2003",winxp\inic1620.sys,winxp

When it should have been:
[Disks]
d1 = "INITIO INIC1620 S-ATA Adapter for Windows
NT4.0",\winnt\inic1620.sys,\winnt
d2 = "INITIO INIC1620 S-ATA Adapter for Windows
2000",\win2000\inic1620.sys,\win2000
d3 = "INITIO INIC1620 S-ATA Adapter for Windows
XP/2003",\winxp\inic1620.sys,\winxp

The backslashes were missing from the file paths at the end of those three
lines. I added the backslashes and it worked fine to build the BartPE CD and
it worked to load two different adapter drivers when booting ShadowProtect.

Gee, that was fun! So much for depending upon the manufacturer to build the
file correctly!

Gregg, the F6 option is not an SBS "thing" but a Windows "thing".

Yes, when you press F6 from Windows, you get an ability to install more
than one diskette. I have used ShadowProtect to also do the F6 thing, but
only with a single diskette. Again, I believe that that is a Windows
thing. If it is not letting you add a second driver diskette, then contact
Storagecraft tech support. They are super responsive.

But let me ask you this, have you tried booting up Shadowprotect without
doing the F6? I have a server with SCSI Raid that I was expecting to do an
F6, but I didn't press it in time, and lo and behold, it came up and saw
my drives anyway.

Hello!

I have a generic question regarding the "Hit F6 to install additional
adapter drivers" that one sees when first installing Windows. I am using
an application from StorageCraft called ShadowProtect which starts up off
of a bootable CD and starts a GUI interface (it looks like a normal
Windows boot when it first starts). When it first boots, it says to hit
F6 to load additional drivers. I have two adapters, a Siig SATA adapter,
and an Adaptec 1420SA SATA RAID controller. I can only load the drivers
for one or the other of these adapters using F6, but not both. Once I
load one (either one), if I hit "S" again, it keeps trying to load the
one that is already loaded and does not give the chance to load another
driver.

Is this the same behavior I would see when actually loading SBS, or does
SBS let you use F6 to load more than one set of drivers for multiple
adapters?

I am wondering if this behavior is limited to the ShadowProtect
application or if it is a Windows thing.

Any help is appreciated!

Gregg Hill
