Re: server 2003 standard domain user local rights

You don't need to make it a DC just a member server in the domain. Use the
Setup Server Wizard on the SBS.

I'm not quite sure how that's supposed to work....when I use the Configure
Your Server Wizard to add the Domain Controller role, select Additional
domain controller for an existing domain, it then takes me to the screen
where it asks for the network credentials. I type in the domain
Administrator account and password, the domain is already filled in with
"DI-COMM.local" and click next. It gives me an error:

An Active Directory domain controller for the domain DI-COMM.local could
not
be contacted.

The details of the error are:

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location
(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain
DI-COMM.local:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DI-COMM.local

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a domain controller for the
domain
are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server
automatically when a domain controller is added to a domain. They are
updated
by the domain controller at set intervals. This computer is configured to
use
DNS servers with following IP addresses:

4.2.2.2
192.168.254.1

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its
child
zone:

DI-COMM.local
local
. (the root zone)

For information about correcting this problem, click Help.

I'm not exactly sure what this is supposed to mean, but I've also tried
using just DI-COMM as the domain name instead of DI-COMM.local and got the
same error.

Please Help!

Add the 2nd server 2003 as a domain member server and you will then be
able
to login with domain accounts.

i have a sbs 2003 server acting as PDC and have another server that we
had
to
get standard server 2003 and put it on there (due to intel's
compatibility
discrepancies and general lack of intelligence). my question is,
obviously
there is some sort of compatibility issue where sbs 2003 want to be the
boss
of it all and doesn't play nice with other servers, so, with just
standard
server 2003 on the 2nd server, i want to have a domain user account on
the
server with some local priveliges. every time i try to add a user, it
only
adds local users, not domain users, therefore, inorder to do much of
anything
on the standard 2003, i have to login with local administrative
account,
or
constantly use the "run as" under the domain account, which really
doesn't
seem like it is being added to the server when i log in with the domain
account, because it will take forever to load and create the profile
and
everything.
