Re: Exchange connection via 3rd party proxy server SBS SP1 Standard?

Thank you,

Further questions answered!

I am sending and collecting mail at this point without problems, so do
not need to change the specific e-mail settings
I am keeping the same ISP and I download my mail via the POP Collector
and teh SMTP si set up correclty to send to my ISP.

What I am trying to establish, is to change WHERE, via my own LAN,
Exchange connects to the Internet.

My internet connection currently is via a router on my LAN which has a
wireless connection, which is very slow. This Router is a Client on the
Lan, and I just enter the Clients IP to connect as a router [or as a
Broadband connection, as I can also set the gateway to this router.]

I now what to change my internet connection and make sure that Exchange
communicates via this new connection. [it is an always on Satellite
connection],
This satellite connection is installed on a different Client to where
the Router is installed, but it is also on the local LAN, but ant
Client connecting here must go via a proxy Server installed on this
Client [rather than a router which I am using now].
I would like to "direct" exchange to only download via the satellite
connection, and thus need to somehow make Exchange "see" the proxy
server.

The way I do this in Internet explorer is to enter the proxy details
under the LAN connection settings i.e. [IP + Port]. And I am not aware
of anywhere in Exchange I can force the connection to an 3rd party
Proxy on the LAN

Is there a way I can force Exchange to see this proxy?

With thanks

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

To narrow down the problem, would you please help me collect the following
information?

1. You said "I would like to enable Exchange to connect for POP collection
and SMTP sending via a proxy server on a separate Client on my LAN", can
you describe the detailed situation? Do you mean you want to configure a
SBS and LAN of the SBS to receive and send email via a Smarthost?
2. You said "Currently I am receiving and sending Exchange mail via a
router connected to the Internet situated on a separate Client on the SBS
LAN, but would like to change this to another client which has the proxy
installed. Using the gateway settings on Exchange, does not work for
connecting to this proxy server", do you mean now you receive and send
email via internet directly and you want to change to use Exchange to
forward email to your ISP when the LAN workstation send email and receive
email using Exchange?

If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate to let me
know.

Also I provide the detailed steps to configure Exchange on SBS for your
reference:

1. Open the Server Management console. Go to Standard Management\To Do List.
2. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.
3. Click Next. You can choose "Do not change connection type and then click
Next".
4. Select Enable firewall and then click Next. Select all the options and
then click Next.
5. Select the web sites you want to publish and then click Next.
6. Select Create a new Web server certificate and then type your FQDN.
7. Click Next and select "Enable Internet e-mail" and click Next.
8. Choose to use DNS for email if you have a broadband connection and your
ISP does not block SMTP port 25. You can also forward emails to your ISP's
email servers if they require you to do so. Click Next.
9. Choose the correct method to receive emails (SMTP). For example: Use
Exchange and E-mail is delivered directly to my server. Click Next.
10. On the "E-mail Domain Name" page, type your public Internet email
domain name. This is very important here. Click Next.
11. Go through the remaining steps.
12. If you have a hardware firewall in front of your SBS 2003 box, please
make sure that the following traffics are enabled:

1) Outbound TCP 25 to send e-mails to external e-mail domains.
2) Inbound TCP 110 point to the SBS Server to receive e-mails from external
e-mail domains.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
