"Plug and play" has been around far longer than Microsoft's adoption of
the phrase.
It is generically used for a piece of hardware installed by an un-savvy
or non-technical user. It is simple enough to be interchangable with
an identically mass-produced product by a monkey swapping the plug.
As I said, slapping an AV product on top of Windows does not make it
plug-and-play. True for workstations and servers.
Without any details, only an "hacked!" subject line, I was interpreting
the OP to be a typical Windows user who installed from a CD, plugged
into the web, then left for dinner, thinking an AV package is all
that's needed for security.
Truthfully, how many hundreds of "I've been hacked!!!" panic messages
are posted every day? The tone and lack of detail matched the profile.
I guessed wrong on this one. I apologize.

I don't know what the statement from Alan of this means?
You cannot install an AV product on top of Windows and plug-and-play on
the WWW.
Because you can install a AV product on Windows and plug and play is
hardware?????
Anyway.
