RE: Fax Notificatin.. TIF file open error

Hi Martin,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: you receive the
following error message when you want to open the attachment:
================================
Cannot create file: FAX.TIF.
Right click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click
properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions on the folder
================================
If I am off base, please feel free to let me know.

Based on my research, this issue may occur due to Outlook security
restriction or file association. I would like to provide you with the
following troubleshooting steps to narrow down the issue:

Step 1: Modify OutlookSecureTempFolder key
---------------------------------------
We modify the following registry key to force Outlook to use a specific
folder for temporary files. To do this:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security\OutlookSec
ureTempFolder

Note: You may need to manually create this registry key if it does not
already exist on your system.

If Outlook installed on a terminal server, use the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal
Server\Install\Software\MICROSOFT\Office\11.0\Outlook\SECURITY\OutlookSecure
TempFolder

3. On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then add the following registry
value:

Value data: C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet Files\OLK11D\

4. Quit Registry Editor.

More information is documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
article:

"Cannot create file" error message when you attempt to open or save an
e-mail attachment in Outlook 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;305982
Note: The "9.0" may vary according to your Outlook version. In Outlook
2003, it is 11.0 as described above.

If the issue still occurs, please go to next step.

Step 2: Associate .TIF file to Microsoft Office Document Imaging
---------------------------------------
1. Open Windows Explorer, click Folder Options from the Tools menu.
2. On the File Types tab, locate TIF in the registered file types list,
what application is set to open TIF files?
3. Click Change, select Microsoft Office Document Imaging and click OK
twice.

Does this resolve the issue? If not, please go to next step.

Step 3: Modify the registry to loss the security setting:
---------------------------------------
1. Quit Outlook if it is running.
2. Click Start-> Run-> Input "regedit" (without the quotation marks) and
press Enter.
3. Locate the following registry key. If it does exist, please manually
create it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security

4. In this key, create a new String value "Level1Remove".
5. Modify its value as ".tif" (without the quotation marks).
6. Quit Registry Editor and Restart your computer.

For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge
Base article:

290497 OL2002: You Cannot Open Attachments
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290497
Note: The "10.0" may vary according to your Outlook version. In Outlook
2003, it is 11.0 as described above.

In addition, if you are in a Microsoft Exchange environment and your
administrator has configured the Outlook Security settings, please consult
with the administrator to modify the security settings for your mailbox.

For more information about this, please refer to the following Knowledge
Base (KB) article:

Q290499 OL2002: Administrator Info About E-Mail Security Features
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q290499

I hope the information above is helpful.

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

Please save the .TIF attachment to the local disk and open it there. Can
you open the .TIF file now?

Thank you for your time.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know. I'm happy to be of
assistance and looking forward to your reply.

Have a good day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu
