Re: Outlook2003 POP3-IMAP <Or> Exchange | Confused!?

Just something I want to get my head round before I begin the Exchange setup,
how does it work with users who have more then one inbox from different
domains?

Example:
This is how we are currently set up, each user has about three or more
inbox's all Sending/Recieving through Outlook POP3. So each user can access
all inboxs from one Outlook session and then reply or send as long as they
select the right account from Outlooks Account selection. Primitive I know.

User A has;
usera-work@xxxxxxxxxx
usera-personal@xxxxxxxxxx

But now each user will have onto of the inbox they already, more inbox's
from different domains needed to be added and accessed by that user.
Prefferable in one session like the Outlook POP3 setup above, rather then
having to login-out to different accounts.

usera-work@xxxxxxxxxxxx
usera-work@xxxxxxxxxx

So is it possible to have Exchange work more then one different domain email
address, and give a user access to all of inbox that are assigned the them
accessible in one session?

?
Thanks
Carl

Okay, only I know that was something my helper brought up.

I think I shall set up a test run first so I'll keep you posted when I hit a
brick.

Your web site and your Exchange are independent of each other. To receive
incoming SMTP mail you'll need to have your DNS hosting service setup an A
record (something like mail.mydomain.com) for your public IP address and
then an MX record that uses that A record. Its also best to setup a
secondary MX record with some mail hosting service to queue your mail when
your server is down for maintenance etc. I'm sure Lanwench can fill in the
details about the process or point you to good help sites if necessary.

Thanks Lanwench I shall revisit the Exchange install again. I think with
all
the re-direction and IE GPO problems we occured, we just got it into a
work
state and then said 'sod it! enough'. But I managed to fix all the issues
bar
the IE GPO.

So let me get this straight. If I install Exchange, do I need to then
re-direct our web server @email.com to point to our sbs exchange?

*Note I'm not an IT bod by trade I've just been roped in to helping
out. Next time I'll just stick to 3dsmax! :-)

Here is the setup;

I've set (with some help) the office up with 4x XP Pro SP2
workstations permanently connected to our sbs2003 domain all using
Folder Re-Direction and roaming profiles. Each of these machines is
then using local installations of applications, Office 2003, AVG etc
with Outlook 2003 as the preferred choice of email client.

We then also have 3x XP Pro SP2 laptop's which are also members of the
domain and using folder re-direction and cached credentials (which
actually works and works well!) (although for some reason the
Re-Direction settings wouldn't copy across during the connect
computer setup and each machine had to be manually adjusted via the
registry to point to the server. Anyway that now works). Again using
locally installed applications with Outlook 2003 as the preferred
choice of email client.

All of the Outlook's have been configured to use POP3 via our Linux
web server (external), as my assistant and myself don't know how to
setup and test Exchange

This is something you ought to play with on a test server. It's not that
tough to set up. And is much better.

and we also didn't know how using Exchange
would affect our laptop users.

Much better. OL2003 with cached mode, and RPC over HTTP, will give them
access to their *entire* mailbox and the GAL and any public folders
whether
in or out of the

We have tried using IMAP as an
alternative but it didn't favour with our test users.

It wouldn't for me, either, but a) it's at least better than POP and b)
end
users aren't the ones who ought to be making decisions about your
company's
mail platform, are they?

So it seems
everyone comfort zone is Outlook. The other reason is that have is we
use SugarCRM.com's Outlook plugin, which only accepts POP3 or IMAP.

Oh, that stinks. Do you really need that specific product? I'd ditch it
in
favor of something that was designed for a more, er, enterprise
environment.

I did look at the possibility of just using OWA but felt there where
too many options missing when put along side Outlook 2003.

Yep. But it won't work with your CRM, and it won't work if you are using
POP.

But I'm
sure someone will tell me Outlook2003 and Exchange would work. The
reason was I felt having the laptop user VPN to our server would be
too slow.. Again I don't know.

No need to VPN - RPC over HTTP means they connect over port 443 directly
to
the Exchange server.

However after a recent HDD failure on one of my laptop user's
machines I was able to recover everything from the server other then
the Outlook profile. But as I use the 'leave on the server' and
'remove after xx days' anything other then emails was not lost.

I've since tried re-directing there Outlook Data File to point it to
the server, thinking it would work like Folder Re-Direction.

Do not do this - it is not supported and will cause you rpboelsm.

i.e \\my-server\users\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Except when the user disconnects from the domain Outlook will not open
unless he is re-connected back to the domain.

Right. Avoid PST files - and if you must use them, they must be on the
local
hard drive.

So is there any way round my Outlook2003 problem?

Or I'm open to any suggestion that would fit the problem?

Get Exchange configured to handle all your company's mail. I'm sure you
can
get a lot of help if you ask - or get a consultant in to make sure that
this
(and your whole SBS box) is set up right.

Thanks
Carl
