I cannot use Windows or Microsoft Update services through the Start ->
Programs -> Microsoft Update menu item or via Tools -> Windows Update in the
Internet Explorer. The ActiveX scan fails with 0x80072EE2 and all KB
solutions have failed. The problem began about 8/1/06 on this server using
Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition and on a Windows XP Professional
SP2 workstation. Network is composed of 4 workstations and 1 servers. The
only common thread is that the owner called and stated that she could no
longer send or receive attachments in her Yahoo mail account.
Another interesting point is that I cannot login into Passport from these
systems, nor can I submit to any of the other online assistance. I end up
with the infamous “Page not found” error. The firewall is external and the
configuration looks reasonable. Could there be a port for SBS that I should
be forwarding and I am not? I followed the book on ports to forward for SBS.
Yes, virus checks, malwares checks and other checks for unwanted programs
has turned up nothing. Anyone have any suggestions?

It is really "bad" that I am replying to myself, but maybe it will help
somebody else!
Well this is is embarrassing . . . I just recently noticed the spelling in
my original post was “Nicrosoft” rather than “Microsoft”. My apologies
Bill!
Perhaps the start of a new dynasty?
Anyway the problem has been resolved.. And the solution was painfully
simple! The owner of the business I have been working with also has a “new”
contract with Pitney Bowes for a piece of their equipment. A technician from
another area was patiently waiting, on site, for his partner to finish his
tasks and was chatting with my client. My client mentioned how I had been
working on this “Microsoft Update” problem for quite some time and he asked
if he might take a look. The client said, “Sure, no problem”, I mean, after
all she does own the equipment and I have not solved her problem. Anyway,
the technician can see the physical network equipment (Westell Wire Speed
2100 and a Linksys RV0016) and says, “May I take a look?” My client say,
“Sure, go for it!”.
Well the “damn it” here is that I have been looking at BLOGs and forums and
“etc.” and discussions and junk “ad nauseum” from all over the place for a
“solution” to my little dilemma. Nobody mentioned MTU values and DSL in the
same thread.
This guy, from Pitney Bowes, bless his heart, has seen this before! He went
straight to the Linksys RV0016 “admin” web piece, to the “Firewall” settings
page and changed the MTU value from “Auto” to “Manual” and the value “1492”
and lo the Lord said unto the illiterate “go forth and surf” and it worked!
Man did I feel dumb! But my “life” is in the corporate world with ATM, frame
relay, etc. (yeah, sorry about that . . . working for the “MAN” means change
is “SLOW”).
I do not care what anybody says! . . . This guy needs a “RAISE”. I would
love to send compensation, but I work for the “STATE”, the “govment”, the
“MAN” and I am very proud of every cent they put in my account, so
compensatory gratitude may be lacking. I am extremely appreciative!
This is “way” too “verbose”, sorry. The solution is simple, watch out for
my values and MTU!
Thanks,
William E. Staples
