Re: disk activity alert

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Go to the Dell support site, to the downloads page for the PE2800. Look
under SCSI Controllers. There's a long list of Maxtor drives with firmware
upgrades. If your drive is on the list, do the upgrade NOW (apparently
these drives are causing all kinds of problems and Dell considers it
critical).

The download is an ISO that creates a bootable CD. When you boot from the
CD, the firmware upgrade process is simple and obvious. I recommend doing
one drive at a time (a Dell rep implied to me that the automated process to
do all the drives at once is a little flakey). After each one completes
successfully, do the next one.

I was talking to Dell on a completely different issue on a different server
model, and the guy brought this up repeatedly, even checking to see if my
2800 was on the list. So apparently they're pretty concerned to get people
to do this upgrade immediately.

And the short answer (too late now, I know) - I used to get this error once
in a while, and have not since I did the firmware. That doesn't convince me
the firmware was the issue, but it's certainly a possibility.

Ok I get the following alert the same time everyday on a pretty robust
server (Dell 2800, 4GB, RAID5, 20 users)....
Alert on SERVER at 10/5/2006 8:25:15 AM

The following disk has low idle time, which may cause slow response time
when reading or writing files to the disk.

Disk: 0 C: D: F:

Review the Disk Transfers/sec and % Idle Time counters for the
PhysicalDisk performance object. If the Disk Transfers/sec counter is
consistently below 150 while the % Idle Time counter remains very low
(close to 0), there may be a problem with the disk driver or hardware.

Any ideas???
