Yes we know about the /UM switch. Opinions differ, some say it works
with W2K not with W2K3, some say in W2K3 it works but it's not
documented, others that it won't work, others that it works but that
it has to be at the end of the line. My tuppence worth is that it
works sometimes and sometimes not. I've yet to see an authoritative
post from MS on the subject. The advice I get from the local MS
office is that must Enterprise users buy a third party backup product.
We do know how to use RSM to set up a tape rotation system and it
does work. But it does NOT meet the KISS principle and we don't want
to use it.
Surely MS should support the simple option a la NT4 for the plebs and
let users who want sophisticated tape rotation systems machine
enforced buy a third party solution.
NTBackup and specifically the SBS Backup wizard that use it are an excellent
solution if they fit your needs. For the target audience for SBS the backup
wizard is a built in solution that is easily configured and works. No one is
forcing you to use it. If it doesn't meet your needs or you simply prefer
something else then use something else. No one is stopping you from using a
3rd party solution. The reason many are vocal about using the wizard in SBS
is because of search engines archiving these threads. In the vast majority
of SBS installs the Backup wizard combined with a good tape drive is all
they need. Threads that discourage it's use may discourage someone from
doing backups at all or may cause them to spend money on something they
don't really need. The SBS Backup wizard is supported by Microsoft The
person administering the network (often not a professional IT person) can
pick up the phone and get help when their server is down and they need to
restore it NOW. Most SBS installations are for "plebs". Most SBS
installations do not have tape changers and sophisticated tape rotation
systems.
