Re: SBS 2003 - Exchange 2003 - Information Store Will Not Start

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Very odd. It seems like Exchange is not talking to the AD. I'm assuming
you're not having other issues or you would have mentioned them
(particularly anything AD related).

One more thing you could check is to go to AD Users and Computers. Go to
the top-level Users container (right under the server level, not under
MyBusiness). Make sure you have the security groups Exchange Domain Servers
and Exchange Enterprise Servers. Your SBS should be a member of Exchange
Domain Servers, and Exchange Domain Server should be a member of Exchange
Enterprise Servers and Pre-Windows 2000 Compatible Access.

There is all kinds of information about these errors in
support.microsoft.com, Google and eventid.net, much of which does not seem
to apply, and some of which requires the use of ADSI edit. I'm not enough
of an Exchange or AD guru to feel comfortable advising you about that, and
unless you can come up with a lot more specific diagnosis, I'd call PSS and
let them talk you through it. In any case, the cost of a PSS call seems
likely to be less than the value of your time chasing this around.

Hey Dave,

Nothing either of those logs that has anything to do with this... and
more notably, nothing recent. I do have another under application
logs..:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeSA
Event Category: Monitoring
Event ID: 9098
Date: 9/26/2006
Time: 1:47:26 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
The MAD Monitoring thread was unable to read its configuration from the
DS, error '0xc004038a'.

That's a system attendant problem that I think might be tied to the IS
problem? Looks like it's having trouble distinguishing a domain
controller?

This is just odd.

Do you have any errors logged in the Directory Service or File

Service logs? I'm coming up with a fair number of hits in searching for
the
two errors, but none of them seem to apply other than those you've ruled
out.

I'd definitely call PSS (Microsoft support) for help with this before I
reinstalled anything. Reinstalling SBS is a big nightmare that includes
profile issues on the client PCs, and without having diagnosed the
original
issue, you could end up right in the same spot you are now. This could
be
something very simple that would be rapidly diagnosed by an Exchange
support
tech.

Technically yes, this is a new install. SBS was installed before I
arrived, and Exchange was not installed during the initial setup.

I guess that's new, yeah?

The organization name has no hybrid characters in it. The Exchange
install was done using control panel, change/remove on the SBS. It
installed w/o any errors.

Would it be easier to nuke the entire SBS install and start over?

Dave,

I didn't "change" permissions.. my bad.. I ensured the permissions
were
as installed as one of the error messages (via MS Technet) said that
it
could be the problem. I'm all good there. Here are the 2 error
messages I get every time I attempt to start the IS:

Dave Nickason [SBS MVP] wrote:
Hi Chris - What permissions have you changed that could be causing
this?
Exchange should have installed with the correct permissions, so you
shouldn't have had to change anything in that regard.

When you try to start the IS and it fails, it'll be logging errors
in
the
Application logs. If those don't point you right to the cause,
please
post
them here.

Hi,

Exchange is driving me nuts. The information store service will
not
start, and I am pretty sure that I have permissions correct.

Anyone who can walk me through what I might be doing wrong,
please
contact me. I'd be happy to email screenshots or whatever you
might
need. I'm not a MCSA.. not by a long shot.. and this exceeds my
knowledge.

Thanks in advance for all replies!

-Chris
