Re: User's desktop changed after other user logged into PC

Lanwench, I'm back with another question related to this issue...
One of the things I tried BEFORE I installed and ran UPHClean was to
uninstall and reinstall MS Office 2003 SBE, which, of course, did not resolve
the problem. After running UPHClean, the error messages went away and the
user's Outlook is working as it should. HOWEVER, he has just sent me an
email stating that the animations he had embedded into PowerPoint
presentations are now not working. He has tried downloading new ones, but
still no joy.
Can I do a system restore back to a point before all this happened and his
PP presentation animations will work again or is there another/better
solution?
Thank you for your help!

Lanwench - Thank you!
UPHClean fixed it.
Glad to hear it. I'm honestly not sure why this is not included in SP2 or a
Windows Update. There's no downside to having it, and plenty of downsides to
*not* having it, even without roaming profiles....
Have also disabled Offline Files on the user's desktop
Make absolutely sure you disable Offline File Caching on the *share*
properties of the parent folder where your profiles live on the server.
For the client bits, given that offline files on a LAN connected computer
really doesn't make much sense to me at all, you might consider disabling it
via Group Policy.
and will take
steps to incorporate your suggestions.

The two main issues are:
Desktop contains more documents and icons that before "other" user
logged on to PC.
Outlook and Word are both showing error message - "MS Office Word
has encountered a problem and needs to close". When you say "don't
send", a small dialog box comes up that says "MS Word is currently
recovering your documents". The Word reopens, has the same error
message, and the same dialog box opens when you say "don't send."
The only way to stop this from happening is to close out Winword.exe
using the Task Manager.
Those aren't really the core issues - those are the symptoms of the
underlying problem.
Yes, using Roaming Profiles, the user's profile is just over 2GB in
size.
That's bad. That is likely a big part of the problem. Use something
like TreeSize or other utilities to find out where the stuff is.
Keep your profiles tiny - like, say, 20MB
They are also using Folder Redirection, but it is not trough
Group Policy.
Then they aren't really using folder redirection - I presume you
mean, you've just manually repointed the My Docs to their home
directory or something? I wouldn't do this. Use GPOs.
Event Viewer:
"Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming
Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption Offline
Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are
stored."
That's a pretty clear message :)
Disable offline caching on the profile parent folder on the server -
in its share properties.
There is also another: "The system failed to register host (A)
resource records (RRs) for network adapter with settings ....."
and another
"Faulting app Microsoft Office 11....."
"Faulting app Winword.exe....."
Will system restore and Office Repair Tool resolve these two issues?
Not sure, but you need to fix the underlying causes of your problems
first.

SBS2003 and using roaming users profiles. I have a user that
logged onto another user's laptop to do some work. Now she has
logged off and when the original user logs back onto the laptop,
he has twice as many icons on his desktop. In addition, when he
uses Outlook, he receives Word error messages.
I suspect it has something to do with the user profile, but don't
know where to start. System restore? Restore original's old user
profile?
Check the event logs on the client.
Make sure all clients have the User Profile Hive Cleanup utility
installed & running
How big are your roaming profiles?
Are you using folder redirection? This is critical, especially for
My Documents - and is also a good idea for Desktop if you cannot
train users to store only shortcuts on the desktop. I don't
recommend enabling folder redirection in the 'user management'
console on the server as it will also enable offline files, but
would do this via a custom group policy linked to the MyBusiness
OU.
