RE: Email sit in the Queue?

Dear Nickieo,

Thank you for posting here. My name is Iverson and I'm glad to be working
with you.

From the description, I understand some of the emails stay in the queue and
never deliver. If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to
let me know.

Based on my experience, this issue may occur due to multiple factors. Let's
try the following steps and check the effect.

I. Try to select "Force Connection" to send these queued emails again:

Check if the emails can be sent by right clicking the Queue and choose
"Force Connection". I suggest you also delete all bad emails stored in the
"C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\BadMail" folder. Restart the SMTP
service and check if everything is OK.

II. The issue can also occur if there are corrupted email messages in the
Pickup and Queue folders under C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1.
You can move them out of the folders and then move them in one by one to
test the SMTP functionality.

III. There is another cause. This issue can occur if you have a broadband
connection while you are forwarding emails to your ISP's smart hosts. If
this is the case, I suggest you contact your ISP and see if forwarding to
their mail servers are mandatory. If not you can just use DNS for
delivering emails. You can change the settings by doing the following steps:

1. Open Exchange System Manager.
2. Go to Connectors. Right click SmallBusiness SMTP Connector and choose
Properties.
3. On the General page, select "Use DNS to route to each address space on
this connector". Click OK.

You can do the same steps for your other SMTP connectors. This is based on
your specific requirements.

As you are seeing emails from unknown domain, I would suggest you check to
make sure your Exchange server is not using for open relay. I suggest you
refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

324958 HOW TO: Block Open SMTP Relaying and Clean Up Exchange Server SMTP

310380 HOW TO: Prevent Exchange 2000 from Being Used as a Mail Relay in
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310380

IV. This issue could also occur if you have antivirus or anti-spam
software. I suggest you temporarily disable the antivirus or anti-spam
software for a test.

If the issue disappears, you should contact the anti-virus vendor and know
if their software is fully compatible with Exchange 2000 and SBS 2000. Any
incompatible anti-spam or anti-virus software will surely cause Exchange to
cease functioning. You need to configure the anti-virus software not to
scan the Exchange M: drive and its database files. For more information
regarding SBS 2000 and antivirus software, see:

If the problem still could not be resolved, please help me to gather the
following information:

1. Enable SMTP logging:

A. Open Exchange System Manager, expand Servers -> <Server name> ->
Protocols -> SMTP, right-click "Default SMTP Virtual Server" and click
Properties.
B. Under the General tab, check the option "Enable Logging".
C. With "W3C Extended Log File Format", click "Properties".
D. Under "General Properties", make sure "Use local time for file naming
and rollover" is CHECKED.
E. Switch to the "Extended Properties", and then select to enable All the
logging Options.
F. Click OK to apply the modification.
G. Right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server and click Stop.
H. Right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server and click Start to restart the
SMTP server.

2. Enable message tracking log:

A. Start Exchange System Manager.
B. Expand Servers, right-click the server that you want to use message
tracking on, and then click Properties.
C. On the General tab, click to select the Enable message tracking check
box.
D. Click to select the Enable Subject Logging and Display check box.

3. Reproduce the issue, repeat step 1.G to stop Default SMTP Virtual
Server, copy out or zip the SMTP log files in the
"%systemroot%\system32\logfiles\SmtpSvc1" folder, and then restart the
"Default SMTP Virtual Server".

Send me the SMTP log and message tracking log files. Also run the MPSReport
utility and send the output CAB file to me at v-iversx@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx The
MPSReport utility is available at:

Hope this helps. If there are any updates, please feel free to get in
touch. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,
