Re: HELP - cannot install updates on user's computers

Yes, very much so. Below is the fix. I've found this to vary from firmware
to firmware and standard vs. enhanced OS.

1.. Navigate to http://<your_router_IP_address>/diag.html from a computer
on your network (by default this URL will be
http://192.168.168.168/diag.html)
2.. Enable the setting to allow HTTP byte range requests in the gateway
anti-virus filtering process
3.. Reboot the SonicWALL firewall device
4.. Attempt to download again

If you think installing patches and security updates is expensive, try not
installing them...

Does the BITS/Sonicwall issue affect the WSUS (SBS) server as well, Mark?

If so, I'm all ears on the fix ;-)

First look to see if somebody created a new GPO just for this setting.
If not, do into Default Domain Policy > User Configuration >
Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Updates and look
for a policy of Remove Access to use all Windows Update Features. If
this is enabled, set to Not Configured. If this i not enabled, check the
same path on the other GOPs to ensure it wasn't edited in a random place.
Hope this helps.

BTW, if you are using a SonicWall let me know and I've got a fix for BITS
issues related to SonicWalls.

Perhaps I am not asking the correct question:

In SBS 2003, inital OEM release; where is the setting that causes every
user on the network you be blocked from initiating their own Windows
Updates from IE via Microsoft?

Thanks,

Thanks for the resonse! I am trying to perform a Windows XP update
via the MS website. First, the "Windows Update" choice does not
appear in the Tools menu.

In IE, right?

2nd, if I try to go to Windows Update via
the URL, it says:
[Error number: 0x8DDD0003]
Network policy settings prevent you from using this website to
get updates for your computer.

If you believe you have received this message in error, please
contact your system administrator.
Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem (error

The same thing happens if I try to go to Office Update and download
the latest update.

What I desire to do is temporarily relax the installation/update ban
on PC's here. I have several I would like to personally update,
watching how the update goes, and personally checking to confirm it
went ok.
Thanks again!

Are you using ISA?
Do you have a SUS/WSUS box somewhere on your network?
