Re: windows 2003 server stops responding

Hi,
Thank you very much for replying. This server is a Windows 2003
standard server.
It does not reboot - it jst seems to be hung o frozen as nothing works
- keyboard, mouse, display, network cards (although they have lights on
and so does hard drives).
There is no system fault light or any other light on the server. It
shows light on the power button, fans are working and everythgn inside
the server seems to be working but just dont know wats the problem as
nothing comes on screen and none of the peripherals work except CD
drive.
So the only option I am left with is to reboot this server. After
reboot - I dont see any errror coming up and even the event logs show
nothing except the errors I mentioned here.
This happened again tonight - at the same time - 7:40 PM
I checked and there wasnt too much load on the server. This problem
happend on Tuesday and it happend tonight again and timing is same at
all the occassions.
I am just confused as to what is happening - there is no similarity
between Tuesday's and Friday's work as we have incremental backups
running from Mon-Thursday and then a full backup on Friday, sat and
sunday.
Please advice.
Thank you,
Abhi

Hi Abhi,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
To narrow down the problem, would you please help me collect the following
information?
1. Are you using SBS 2003 server or Windows Standard server for the network
backup?
2. Does the situation occur again after you restart the server?
Based on my research, the Event 6008 is logged as a dirty shutdown. It is
generally recorded when the server reboots unexpectedly. If you configure
the system to "Automatically restart" during System failure, the system
will restart automatically without displaying any blue screen information.
You can perform the following steps to turn off this feature:
1. Right click My Computer, and click Properties.
2. In the Advanced tab, click the "Settings" button in the "Startup and
Recovery" column.
3. Clear the "Automatically restart" option, and click OK.
4. Click OK.
Now it will display the error when system failure occurs.
If you have "Automatically restart" unchecked, no STOP error occurs, and
you still experience Event 6008, please check the following:
1. Many random reboot problems are due to faulty/incompatible memory.
2. Your power supply may not be supplying sufficient power.
3. Please scan for Virus.
4. Overheating could also be a cause of this. Check the CPU, make sure not
over heating. Make sure fan is running for CPU.
5. Any external interference from other electrical devices could also be
the culprit. If you have the wires tied together behind the unit to prevent
clutter, you may want to undo them since that can also cause this kind of
thing.
6. Check to be sure that the CPU is tightly socketed, as well as the
jumpers are set correctly. Please check all other connectors and components
are correctly seated/connected.
7. Be sure that the Motherboard is not shorting out (not common on current
machines, but still does happen).
8. Please check in BIOS and make sure you don't have wake on ring, event,
or LAN (especially LAN) enabled. Try resetting the BIOS to the "default"
settings.
9. Try disabling some of the hardware acceleration features of your
graphics card. You can do this with the slider found on the troubleshooting
property page for your display. Display Properties | Settings | Advanced |
Troubleshoot.
I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| I can see these events in the event log for everyday around 6:30 PM -
| This server is backup server and has tape drive connected to it for
