Re: server freezes often

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Dear Merv,

Thanks so much for your reply. When the machine freezes, we have no mouse
or keyboard control - we need to pull the plug or hold in the power switch to
turn the machine off. As of today, we cannot log-in at all. It freezes
every time on the Ctrl-Alt-Del login screen. We were able to start it in
Safe Mode.

Since I am not at the server (and I do not have remote access), I will have
the person who is with the server try your suggestions tomorrow, and I will
get back to you with the requested information.

Thanks again for your help,

Carolyn

This sounds more like a hardware problem (maybe a bad RAM module). When it
freezes, do you have mouse or keyboard control or do you have to pull the
power plug to restart the server?

System Tools | Event Viewer

If you check the System and Application event logs, do you see any errors?
If so, post the Event ID and description.

Could you also post the ressults of an ipconfig /all for the server:

from a command prompt, type:

ipconfig /all>c:\config.txt

Open the "config.txt" file with Notepad and post the results in a reply to
the newsgroup.

Hi,

I am not an IT-professional, but I was recruited to set up a small network
for a family member's new small business. I live in a different state
than
the network does, and am trying to help solve problems remotely, so I will
do
my best to remember all the specifics about the set-up of the network.

I have SBS 2003 R1 running on an HP ProLiant server. Since setting up
this
network was a trial-by-fire for me, I had to install SBS 3 times before
everything was working correctly (the machine did not have an OS on it
when I
received it.) The first two times I installed SBS, although there were
other
problems, I did not have problems with the installation itself or with the
server freezing. The third time I installed, the machine completely froze
during the installation. We tried again, and again, and finally got it to
install.

Although all aspects of the network itself seem to be working correctly
(internet access, file server access, etc.), the server freezes often, at
least once every few days. And, when we try to re-boot, it freezes again
and
again and again before we can even log-in. It sometimes feels as if we
are
lucky we can log-in at all.

Has SBS not installed correctly? Is this a known problem that Microsoft
has
developed a patch for?

In case it helps, the network consists of the server, two NICs, a wireless
switch, and 2 client machines running XP, SP2. Like I said, everything
else
works beautifully (finally!) Just the server is causing us problems, as
near
as I can tell.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I am happy to answer any
additional questions.

Thanks in advance,

Carolyn
