the good part of that is 'I use a cleaning tape', for DDS you probably
should be looking to use it about every fortnight.
And the bus tart in me prompts me to ask. OK, you use it 'about every
month', it's been in service for 18mths, how many times have you used it?
(it should be clearly marked on the tape, not a hard question :-)
I dunno. You may be using the cleaning tape regularly and I may be a mile
off base, it's just the most obvious answer from the description.
If, by some wild stretch of the imagination, I'm right, run the cleaning
tape through no more nor less than three times. If the backup still fails in
the same manner, another three. If it still fails in the same manner I'm
probably barking up the wrong tree or the drive is stuffed.
Another possibility is that the drive needs recalibrating. To do so you want
a new tape and diagnostic tools from the tape manufacturer. TTBOMK 'drive
recalibration' is a one shot affair for DDS, calibrate it against a dodgy
tape and it will be dodgy forever, if it gets to this a single new cartridge
is worth the expense.

I use a cleaning tape about once a month.

I use a scheduled backup to tape on SBS 2003 on a daily basis. For the
last
18 months this has worked fine with only a handful of fails - usually
because
of something I have or haven't done. However for about the last 6 weeks
it
seems to fail 4 out of 5 times with the following log:
Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: 4mm DDS
Media name: "Media created 11/09/2006 at 00:31"
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f2
Reverting to non-shadow copy backup mode.

Backup Type: Normal
There are then lists of various files that are unaccessible and are
skipped.
The log ends with:

=======================<END NTBACKUP LOG FILE>=====================
NTBackup finished the backup with errors.
I have read about a hotfix which may/may not sort the problem, but it
is
chargeable and if it is not right for me I don't want to get it.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
