Re: Trend Micro - Remote office

Yep, the roaming profiles will work fine, but you I don't think you can do
much 'centralized management' at the remote office.

A couple of years ago, I set up 2 independent SBS 2003 servers at a client
and then called Trend. They said the best way to handle it, so that you
could do centralized things and keep the licensing/billing paperwork simple,
was to combine all the licenses under the company name (and one activation
code) and then install Trend CSM on both servers. Been working fine very
since. Each server manages its own group of computers and gets its
definition updates independently through the Trend servers. Each server
shows the same number of total licenses (seats) in each Officescan console.
I used the same activation code for each server. Trend said that it didn't
matter how many "servers' you install CSM on (as long as you stay with the
total license count) because the "server" itself takes a license just like a
workstation. All they were concerned with was "nodes".

Maybe an advantage here is that there's no need to do VPNs or roaming
clients, or worry about Internet access problems back to the main server (in
the case of VPN).

If the remote office is connected via VPN, the computers can be clients of
the CSM installed on the SBS. If they're not connected via VPN, there are
two other options that still allow you to use your existing CSM
installation ...

a) make them roaming clients, they'll update directly from Trend's
servers.
b) publish your Trend web from the SBS to the internet, and have the
remotes join/install and update that way. I've never done this, but it
should certainly be possible.

This should help you remove Norton from your workstations... (Note:
ALWAYS remove Norton before installing any other AV software. Don't rely
on another AV product to remove it for you - as you found out).

AV Recommendations

I'm assuming your remote network doesn't have a server. You could buy
additional licenses for CSM and then just install everything but the
Exchange package on a Windows XP Pro workstation (running Apache Web
server 2.0) on your remote network. (Combine all the licenses under one
license number). Essentially, this gets you Trend's Client/Server suite
at the remote office. Or, you could separately purchase Trend CS and
install it on a WinXP Pro workstation (running Apache Web server 2.0).
All workstation should then be left on 24/7 to pick up the latest AV
updates from the WinXP Pro (server) workstation.

I recently purchased and installed Trend Micro CSM using Wayne Small's
guide
from SBSfaq.com.

Several things I'm running into, that maybe someone can help me with.

1. What would be a good antivirus solution for our remote office that is
not
logging into the domain?

2. When I tried installing on one client machine locally, CSM first
attempted to remove Norton Internet Security, but the remove failed.
Now, I
cannot even remove Norton via add/remove programs. Anyone ever ran into
something like this?

Thanks for the help!
