Mike's server would need to be unavailable for some reason for the mail to
be delivered to the ISP's servers. I have seen cases where the ISP uses a
seperate internal DNS system for faster local lookups and when the public
records have been updated the local records have not, I think this
unlikely in Mike's case.

Setting up the POP3 connector to cause such a setup to act as a 'sortta'
store/forward service is possible but it exposes you to the weaknesses of
the POP3 connector, having to maintain the mailboxes at the ISP or using a
global mailbox, stripped header information, infrequent non-delivery of
mail (NOTE: I do not consider the 15 minute retrieval interval one of
these weaknesses).

A few possibilities. If a sender uses the same ISP and you use your ISP as
a backup then the senders email will never leave the ISP network. Kind of
like sending internal email within your office. It never leaves your
network. Also your ISP's SPAM guard could be preventing emails from being
delivered also. If there is legitimate emails being tagged as SPAM via
your ISP you need to setup POP3 accounts on your exchange and have it
pulled from the ISP's mail server at auto intervals. Proably how you had
it setup before you started hosting your own SMTP Exchange server.

=============================
Our Director just told me that he isn't getting all his emails (he's
been out of town for 4 days and is checking them today). He checked our
ISP's webmail (they hosted our email for the last year - I switched us
over to Exchange about 2 weeks ago), and saw over 100 emails there. I
did a quick check of the ISP's webmail on my account - it's empty.

Our Exchange has an MX record listed with the highest priority; I've got
teh 4 mail servers for the ISP listed with lower priorities so they can
act as a backup (I never communicated to the ISP that we are now on
Exchange.)

Any ideas on what happened and why?
