Hello.
Here is the settup:
2 offices; one runs SBS 2003, the other has Win2000 server. Would
like to create VPN tunnel btwn them so users can transparently access
resources on both offices.
The SBS computer only has 1 NIC.
I can ccnnect via VPN remotely to either office from home.
Using Routing and Remote Access, I set up VPN tunnel from Win2000
server to SBS - that works.
If I try to create the VPN tunnel from SBS to Win2000, I only get
PPPoE as a connection type! There is no PPTP available as a choice
??!!
BTW, I can create a VPN connection from the SBS to Win2000 by means of
"Network Connections/ Add a new Connection" wizard , which DOES work
!!??!!
Is there something preventing me from using PPTP on the VPN tunnel on
the SBS server??
Thanks in advance.
I agree entirely with cjobes' reply. This is not a job for your server. Set
up a VPN WAN link between two compatible routers/firewalls (I like
Sonicwalls, myself).
Remember, beyond that, "transparently access" may not be your actual result.
The remote office should probably have its own DC/DNS/GC, so the computers
in that office can join the domain and authenticate against a local DC.
The users should access Exchange via RPC/HTTP and cached mode (this will
give them access even when your tunnel is down if the Internet connections
are up)
Also note that file access over VPN is sucky, and you might consider DFS or
even a simple robocopy job to sync the data on shares on their server with
shares on your server, nightly.
