and on the activation issue, I wouldn't be surprised if internet based
activation worked but if you do need to call MS call the number prompted by
'telephone activation' and explain the circumstances, it should take no
longer than five minutes.

Thank you that does clear things up.

Since you have a retail version, there is no issue here. R2 is ONLY an
addon
to SBS SP1. For Premium, it's 3 disks. For standard, just the one. You
build
your new server, do your migration (see www.sbsmigration.com) and then
install R2.

I have a retail boxed version of 2003 premium and would like to upgrade
to
the R2 version. I want to move this to a new server in the process and
plan
to do a clean install and migrate just the mail accounts. I don't
really
want to drag along all the previous years of failed virus scanners and
other
applications.

In the past Microsoft upgrades have been full versions that look for a
previous copy on the HD and if none found ask for a licensed disk
during
install. Is this true with R2? My reason is I would like to run the
R2
disk, have it ask for the SBS 2003 disk and then move on with the
install.
I
hate laying an OS over top another OS during an upgrade as I still
shudder
from the days of ME and 98 "upgrades" Also it feels much cleaner to do
a
fresh install.

Also if I do go this route how do I handle the activation of the new
machine? Will I be forced to call Microsoft and plead my case to call
center
in hopes they will understand my situation?

Last but not least my understanding is that my 25 device cals that I
currently posses will be useable with the r2 update. Please let me
know
if I
am misinformed.

Thank you for your help
