<blush> Why, thank you.
I'm thinking of implementing your "Laptop OU" / SecondCopy strategy
for this client. I'll see how it goes, and then maybe implement it
elsewhere too. I like the c:\data idea as well.
Let me see if I've got this right. I'll need to:
- Reimage the laptop (just to get rid of the current quirkiness).
If you need to, sure.
- Setup the "new" laptop in an OU of it's own.
Yep. I'd put an SBSLaptops OU at the same level as SBSComputers.
-- Can I "copy" the existing SBS Computers OU (to a new OU called SBS
Laptops) and then modify just the SBS Laptops Folder Redirection
policy (to go to c:\data).
You can't copy an OU, but you don't need to. You should create and link a
new GPO for that OU, tho.
- Once that's done, I create a special folder on the server for the
user, right?
No; doesn't he have a home directory already?
- Then I install SecondCopy, and set it to sync c:\data with the
special user folder on the server?
Yes, and I use UNC paths. But as I said, best to do a robocopy job from
\\server\users\username to c:\data first...
NOTE: Presumably, only one user can use the laptop? If any other user
logs onto the laptop, all their files will also get dumped into
c:\data (which sounds like another headache)?
Yep, it's entirely possible. I don't like users sharing laptops. It causes
tons of problems with Offline Files, too. If a company needs a shared laptop
I like to set it up with a generic login - they can use it for getting to
the Internet and hence RWW, as well as work on local copies of files they
decided to take with them on a USB memory stick or whatnot. That's their
business; I really try to avoid supporting it.
Thanks. Macker.
