Re: Unsure of what to do...

Well, I assume you would have to have the drivers on floppy, yes. Only the
RAID drivers are an issue - all others you can load once the core OS is
loaded - there's a natural stopping point when Windows is loaded, but none
of the SBS components have been loaded yet. You can pause there and load the
drivers you'll need later, such as network drivers if your NIC needs a
driver, for example. Then you restart the install and finish.

Thanks for replying Charlie
I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure. This brings up another
question though. With the upgrade of my OS to SP1 (I have squeezed some
SP1 a set of full install media out of Dell) if I use the SP1 media to do
a re-install will those drivers be on the disks or is the media missing
the drivers for RAID ect....? On the new media SBS SP1 disks that they
shipped there is no mention of Dell. They are from Microsoft Licensing.
Am I assuming correctly that if I have to do a complete re-install and use
the SP1 media I will have to get the drivers loaded from a drive other
than the CD?

Thanks
Jeff

If you flattened the machine, there's no drivers on it. You boot from the
CD, and add the drivers. On Dell servers, if SBS is a supported OS, they
are supposed to streamline the drivers onto the SBS CD so that you don't
need a floppy.

An external USB floppy is normally fine, by the way. I keep one here,
sitting in the server room, in a ziplock bag on the back shelf. Just in
case.

Hi Charlie

I have a question that relates to loading RAID drivers that I have been
wondering about. Several months ago I flattened my server and started
over with a clean install. I'll try not to leave out any thing but it's
been a while since I've done this!! Before I did the new install though
I made the C:\ partition larger using the install CD. Would the drivers
for RAID still be on the system from the original install or are they
taken off when the partition was increased? I ask because I don't have
a floppy drive and there would be no other way (except an external
floppy) but to use the CD drive to get that done if I could not use it.
It is a Dell Server that had SBS preinstalled. I can't remember for
sure if I had to do any driver installs before I put the OS on.

Thanks
Jeff

RAID controllers require that drivers be loaded during the initial
installation process. You need the drivers on a floppy (USB key and/or
CD will NOT do!) When the blue installation screen first comes up,
you'll see "Press F6 to load storage drivers" at the bottom of the
screen. Press F6 and then follow the prompts to load your RAID/SATA
drivers.
