Re: Small Business Folder Re-direction GPO Gone from the GPO List

Well It looks like the Built in GPO for folder re-direction that came with
SBS got deleted. How should I go about fixing this?
Thanks,
David

Ok, That is very helpful. How are GPO's applied to certian users in
Server managment? For exampel when I look at all the current GPO they
all say that they apply to anyone who is a part of the authenticated
users group. So how does server managment specify which users
redirect and which do not. I just can't figure out how this works. LOL
Thanks,
David

I don't know how the Server Management taskpad entries/settings specifically
work with, or apply, the Windows server GPOs. I do pretty much all my stuff
in GPMC. You can check that out to look for the settings - and like I said,
try the group policy modeling/results wizards and see what you can find. Do
be careful when you're editing any of the built-in GPOs - and also be
careful with anything custom you create and link, as you don't want to lock
your keys in the car.

Group policy can be confusing at first, but I love it now... I do lurk in
the GP newsgroups for ideas, as I'm still somewhat of a novice at it.

Hey guys,
We dempolyed SBS with My document redirection. Well some of the
users would like to have My Documents redirection removed because
it is there personal computer and well I don't want music and
pictures taking up space on the server :).

Well, I'm wondering why they have non-company computers joined to the
domain - what's the reason? Anyway, even if you want to keep folder
redirection in place, you can create c:\data for them and tell them
to store their music and photos therein and not use the stuff in My
Documents. If you get rid of folder redirection entirely for My
Documents, how will you ensure that company data is staying where it
belongs, on the server? But I digress, as usual.

So latly I have been experementing
with GPO and noticed that the "Small Business Folder Re-directon"
Policy is gone in the group policy managment console. Did the wizard
re-move this? I still have desktops that are syncing and now I can't
disable my docs redirection in server managment. It has no effects
on the computers. Even with a gpupdate /force. So how do I get this
policy back? Did I somehow delete it?
Thanks so much!!
David

I don't know of any way it would just disappear on its own. Where
are you looking? Do you see it in GPMC.msc under Group Policy
Objects?

You can use group policy modeling/results to find out where the GP
for folder redirection is currently being applied - edit the GPO
when you find it, or unlink it entirely.

You can run rsop.msc on a client, and gpresult in a command prompt.

If you do want some computers w/folder redirection, and not others,
you could create another OU - under MyBusiness\Computers, create
PersonalComputers (or whatever) so it's at the same level as
SBSComputers. You could create & link a new GPO for folder
redirection at the SBSComputers level, and *don't* create & link one
at the PersonalComputers OU level.

However, as mentioned above, I wouldn't do this. Either the
computers are for business use or they aren't - and if they aren't,
maybe they shouldn't be domain members in the first place.

Offline files is actually an entirely separate issue, by the way -
and I usually disable that outright. If you don't use the tickbox in
Server Management, but instead edit (or create your own) the GPO
that controls it, you can do only folder redirection without offline
files.
