OK, got it working now...
I was avoiding using the cached mode because I didn't want to have to
clean up the laptop before giving it out.
? Not sure what kind of cleaning you mean. You could just log in as an admin
and delete your windows profile and it would remove it all.
Once I finally decided to use it, it all worked.
There must be something in the cached mode that reroutes or something.
Ah - no. It's just that Outlook has to open up *first* before it connects.
You should always use cached mode anyway, in my book - for LAN connected
computers and laptops and everyone.
However, I cannot use the 'on fast networks use https first' option.
With that it opens outlook but then hangs...
Thats no big deal though.
That's odd - it should. However, it's off by default, and TCP/IP should work
fine.
Thanks for all your help.
You may now sigh and mutter under your breathe about me not using
cached mode before...
I guess it would be silly for me to mention RTFM, now, wouldn't it? <g>
Thanks for all the help though

Do you have a test computer you can use? WinXP SP2, OL2003 SP2.
Set up a brand new profile, using myservername.mycompany.local.
Use cached mode.
More settings, connections, tick RPC/HTTP, go into the proxy
settings and use mycompany.mydomain.com - and the mutually
authenticate thing, set to msstd:mycompany.mydomain.com
Tick the box so that fast connections use RPC and then TCP/IP.
Open Outlook. Enter your credentials (and notice that the
servername should be your *internal* name). See whether it
connects. If so, hold CTRL and click the Outlook icon as mentioned
earlier.
I have installed a new set up on to a laptop overnight to play
around with. I will also trust your judgement that it is safe to put
info on this board...
External address to firewall is ivgwhite.ivgw.co.uk
Domain is ivgw.co.uk
Internal server name is ivgwsvr1.ivgw.local
OK, PC set up as you describe above.
The 'login box' does indeed show ivgwsvr1.ivgw.local
However, when I login, it hangs for about 20 - 30 seconds and then I
get the message 'Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable'.
(I don't get this if I put a line in the hosts file for
ivgwhite.ivgw.co.uk and point it at the servers ip address so I can
only guess that even though Outlook knows the server as
ivgwsvr1.ivgw.local, it is looking to ivgwhite.ivgw.co.uk).
I'm starting to wonder if this in no fault with Outlook but something
somewhere else...
