I'm sorry, I'm going to be somewhat of a pain, not just to make a
point.
RWW is a set of http pages. When accessing these page a user will
experience 'normal' IE problems when printing (you know, when what
you see in IE is not what you get on the printout).
There are a couple of specific functions in RWW that I believe you
may be referring to, the abilities to 'Connect to my computer at
work' or 'Connect to my company's applications sharing server'. When
using these functions the default condition is to 'Allow documents on
the remote computer to be printed locally'. For this to be possible
the driver for the printer must be installed on the remote system,
this is _mostly_ done automagically but there are circumstances where
this will not happen.
IME:
If the 'local printer' is USB connected, YOU'RE STUFFED, it won't
work.
Actually, that isn't entirely true. My clients frequently use their
USB-connected printers via RD/TS redirection. There are a lot of
USB-connected multifunction devices that simply won't work (as you mention
below), but printers generally do.
It depends on a couple of things; the port name/type (which you can deal
with via http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;302361), and the
driver. There have been times when I've had to install a 'fake' local
printer on the TS box or WinXP Pro 'host' computer to get the local driver
into the database, and then I delete the fake printer.
If the connecting user is not able to install a printer driver on the
remote system, YOU'RE STUFFED, it won't work.
They don't need local admin rights or anything to do this, because it's
actually a kind of network printer - and domain users are permitted by
default to install network printers. Of course, the admin may have blocked
this, but out of the box it works.
The administrator of
the system can fix this though, by installing the driver for the user.
If you are impatient, YOU'RE STUFFED, it won't work.
That's probably true enough. In general. :)
Well, actually,
if you waited it would work, the driver would be uploaded to the
remote system, installed, and available for use. Some people try to
print a doc before allowing this to happen.
If it's an MFC device YOU ARE PROBABLY (but not necessarily) STUFFED.
Yep. Or even a regular printer that has only a big fat "software
installation suite" available, not just a driver to download. I've managed
to install the monolithic suite on a test box and find/extract the drivers,
copy them to a network location, and use them later, but this is a big huge
PITA.
Drivers for MFC devices also add software to the PC. Depends on the
MFC device.
Most of them I've seen. I generally advise people who are going to be
working remotely that they may not be able to print if all they've got is a
consumer multifunction printer.
ANYONE connecting with a HP LaserJet 4 compatible device will have no
problem.
Heck, why not go back to the tried & true HP LaserJet III ? That was my
standby for a long time & the driver generally worked with newer Laserjets.
No longer, I think.

Hi All,
We are looking at moving from VPN / RDP to RWW for our remote users
who connect and work from home.
Under VPN / RDP one area that we have always had some issues with is
printing at the user's home to their local printer.
Does anyone know whether this is easier, harder, impossible (?)
using RWW compared to VPN / RDP?
Thanks,
Alan.
