Yes, they can. But they are more likely to actually LISTEN. They may
then ignore you, but at least they rarely interrupt you in the
middle. :)
My last three jobs before going full time to writing and consulting
were with the same EVP. She was not a particularly good manager, and
goodness knows she had "issues" you wanted to avoid. But she was also
smart enough that when I did something I knew she didn't want me to
do, she'd vent for awhile about my being a loose cannon, etc. But
then she'd shut up and leave me alone, counting on me to do it again
when she made a stupid decision like that. And even, after awhile,
have the grace to admit it. So whenever she left a place I was at,
I'd wait a month or so and then call her for a "social" lunch. :) 3
weeks later, I'd have a new job offer. And within 6 months, the place
we'd both been would be in serious trouble or gone. She was like the
canary in the mine. She could smell a cash flow crisis faster than
anyone I've ever known, even with the board was trying to hide it.

That's awesome. You should track her with a little microchip GPS if you
think you can swing it. :)

You know, I agree completely with you. This is such a bad idea I
can't even imagine a circumstance in which I would do it. And yes, I
_have_ left jobs because I had a boss tell me to do something so
stupid I couldn't support it, and I couldn't change (his, of course)
mind.

<snickers> Women can be cruddy managers too, you know. It's the 21st
century. ;-)

Ok, I know this is a no-no, but unfortunately I need to make it
happen. I need to publish access to a local NAS drive from the
outside world to our internal network. Normally I would do this
via a DMZ, etc, but unfortunately right this second I can not. I
am running SBS 2003 Standard and my server has 2 NICs. I am
trying to find where I can find the setting that would forward a
specific port incoming to that device. I have my router
configured already to forward that port to the SBS, but need to
forward from my SBS to the internal NAS device.

I re-ran the Internet connection wizard but it only lets me
define a service and a port, but it doesn't allow me to point
that service to a specific client on the internal network. What
am I missing here? Thanks,
Sean

Hmmm. Well, I really can't think of a situation in which I would
allow direct file access
into my network from the Internet. Seriously. You need to rethink
this...even if a cute kitten will die a tragic death if you don't
open it up Right Away. If
your management is telling you you have to do this, then make them
sign something holding you entirely unaccountable for anything that
ever goes wrong, on your network, ever. It doesn't take more than a
few nanoseconds for bad crap to come into an unprotected network -
and it's not usually from individuals who want your data, it's from
scanners/hijacked computers who want to see what they can mess up,
or turn you into a launching pad/vector for attacking others. You
might as well turn off your firewalls entirely if you're just going
to turn them into screen doors.
That said, I don't use ISA, so I don't know how you'd do this.
Someone else may post more specific advice.
