I see your point Charlie, but why can't MS add to the system requirement's
page for Windows 2003 and SBS 2003, the potential requirement for a floppy
drive? At least people would then know to order a $30 floppy drive with
their new server. Seems like this would end a lot of customer frustration.

NOTE: Some devices, such as RAID controllers, may require the installation
of device-specific software during the Windows Server install process. A
floppy disk drive will be required to complete the installation of this
software. For more information, consult the equipment manufacturer.

Gregg - there really are good reasons for why this is the way it is. At
this point in the process, there is virtually no intelligence in the "OS"
at all - everything needs to be exactly where it expects things to be
because it's reading byte by byte. This is one of the oldest pieces of
code in the whole OS process. It's thoroughly debugged, it works, and it's
just not something that will ever get changed outside of a major OS
release. Which is why it had to wait till Vista/Longhorn. It's changed
there, thank goodness. But that change is not ever going to work its way
backwards. The risks are too high and too many things are dependent.

I sure wish someone on the MS Dev team would patch (fix) the Windows
install procedure so you can alternately use a USB flash drive, external
USB drive, internal IDE/SCSI drive, or CDROM/DVD drive to install the
required drivers when you press F6.

THIS "UPDATE" IS LONG OVERDUE. Anyone from Microsoft listening???

KJ -- the Dell bootable CD does not support SBS, unfortunately. I
installed a PE 2850 last year. I had to purchase a USB floppy drive in
order to insert floppy disks for the required drivers during the F6
process.

Rather than getting frustrated, take this as an opportunity to learn
and
understand what's required, and take good notes. Because the down the
road, if your server has a hardware failure, and you're required to
redo
something, you'll be glad you have notes on which controllers you had
to
load, etc.

Finally, don't rule out calling Dell and asking them to confirm what
drivers you need. That's what I did. Then again, with my 2859, Dell had
forgotten to include the Adaptec controller boards to begin with!

Hello,

I am having trouble getting my server off the ground. I am running
three 300 GB drives in RAID 5. I am using a PERC4e/Di controller. I
run the configuration utility and everything seems fine in there but
then it says:

1 Logical Disk(s) found on the host adapter
0 Physical Disk(s) found on the host adapter
1 Logical Disk(s) handled by BIOS
0 Physical Disk(s) handled by BIOS

When I try to install SBS, it says:

"Setup did not find any hard drisk drives installed in your computer."

I have not had experience setting up a RAID5 configuration. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

And I have a PowerEdge 2850 and the tool sent with the Dell doesn't
support SBS (naturally).
