Re: Installing SBS with Raid 5

On the Dell PEs I've ordered (no raid), the Adaptec 39160 is an add-in
controller that occupies a PCI slot. The Perc 4E/DI RAID is supposed to be
an embedded controller on the motherboard.

Do you physically have an Adaptec 39160 in your PE 2850 (and is it there to
support a SCSI tape drive)? If so, maybe remove it and see if the install
finds the Perc Raid controller with F6 and a floppy with the PERC 4E/DI
drivers..

I am getting very frustrated. It still says that setup cannot find any
hard disk drives. I have the latest PERC4e/Di driver.

What else could it be? I suppose I could try and find the SCSI
controller driver too. All my server says about SCSI is that it is an
Adaptec 39160 but I cannot find a driver for it on Adaptec's website.
Could the SCSI driver be the problem for not finding the HD's?
However, when I enter the RAID config it finds the drives fine.

And what does
1 Logical Disk(s) found on the host adapter
0 Physical Disk(s) found on the host adapter
1 Logical Disk(s) handled by BIOS
0 Physical Disk(s) handled by BIOS

mean?

Thank you very much. I am putting my weekend in here at work and I
need to get this stuff rolling!

Thanks!

Okay, I must have the incorrect driver then. The Dell CD that doesn't
work because I have a PowerEdge 2850 and am installing Microsoft SBS
has many different drivers on it. How can I tell which to use? How
can I tell the exact RAID controller I have? I have a PERC4e/Di
controller but there are so many different drivers on the CD I don't
know exactly what to copy onto my floppy.

Thanks.

Chris is correct, you need to press F6 and add the correct RAID
drivers for
your RAID array controller. Windows will not see the drives without the
right driver. Also, if you choose the wrong driver, it will happily
accept
that, but then fail to see the array since it still doesn't have the
driver
loaded.

I did this and I still get the "did not find any hard drives on your
computer" error.

Any other suggestions?

When I Ctrl-M into the RAID array, it sees the three drives and
builds
the array just fine. Why can't Windows see the drives?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I am having trouble getting my server off the ground. I am
running
three 300 GB drives in RAID 5. I am using a PERC4e/Di controller.
I
run the configuration utility and everything seems fine in there
but
then it says:

1 Logical Disk(s) found on the host adapter
0 Physical Disk(s) found on the host adapter
1 Logical Disk(s) handled by BIOS
0 Physical Disk(s) handled by BIOS

When I try to install SBS, it says:

"Setup did not find any hard drisk drives installed in your
computer."

I have not had experience setting up a RAID5 configuration. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

And I have a PowerEdge 2850 and the tool sent with the Dell
doesn't
support SBS (naturally).

Thanks.
